View Full Version : Some People Need to Take it Easy
Peter

People with lots of toxins need to take it easy at first. If you mobilize lots of toxins and don't eliminate enough, you will feel awful.
Here are indicators that you might need to take it easy:
1. Seriously overweight - The body stores toxins in fat cells when it runs out of room in the liver. Serious overweight indicates there may be lots of toxins and waste to eliminate.
2. Multiple-year history of medical drugs - Antibiotics every few years for infections are probably not much to worry about. Sleeping pills every night for ten years is another situation. If you are on, or have had, heavy psych drugs, chemotherapy, etc. you should definitely check with your health professional.
3. Allergic to many things - Alternative medicine equates allergies with toxic reactions. If you are only allergic to bananas, that's probably not too serious. If you are allergic to 15 things, you need to take it easy.
If you need to take it easy, see the topic "Taking it Easy."

Hello Peter,
My 22 year old son wants to do the MC this month... which is great.. However I am uncertain about the absorbtion of salt in the SSF. He isn't allowed to have salt. His kidney function is extremely low and he has to take medications and do a type of kidney dialysis 4 times a day at home. I know he is full of toxins that have to be released. Would doing the SSF be a problem? The salt water is supposed to be heavy enough so it doesn't get absorbed and just flushes through. He could start off with the sena teas in the p.m. / a.m. then move on to trying a SSF. Medical Doctors are not very open to alternative approaches as I am sure you are aware. Do you think the MC could actually help improve his condition?
Thanks for you input

Hi Winks:
Hopefully Peter will be able to chime in on this - but in the meantime, I would say "err on the side of caution". Your son can safely use the tea morning and night. I know how doctors can be about the cleanse but it would be best to consult a doctor before using the swf if you have concerns. None of us are licensed health care professionals.
All the best to you and your son whatever you decide. Keep us posted. :)

A few years back, my doctor diagnosed me with a heart murmur. It was my understanding that there was no real threat but I would need to take antibiotics when I went to the dentist to err on the side of caution. Do you have any statistics that support fasting for someone with my "condition"?

I keep starting and stopping the cleanse after a day or two being on it. I'm not seeming to get over the 3rd day hump. Are there any health risk to that, will I get constipated or could in hurt me internally. I like doing this.

I personally don't think starting and stopping is not good for your body.
try figuring out what is causing you to cheat on the 3rd day and once you identify the problem, you can take steps to avoid it and get past it.
also, maybe you're not mentally prepared or mentally focused right now.
there is also the possibility that you're too toxic and should first try going gradually into it - try cutting out meat and dairy for a week, then going raw for a week then going into the cleanse.
____taken from the general help for newbies thread__________
How often?
As per Burroughs instructions, 3 or 4 times a year means ever 3 to 4 months. Seasonally even. Cleansing too frequently can be harmful on the body as well as the mind. However Burroughs does say that those with serious health issues can cleanse more often than 3 times a year. He also suggests a diet plan to do in between cleanses so you do not go back to normal eating and yo-yo cleansing.
Starting and stopping digestion can be jarring on your system and confusing to your body. Also, after a cleanse your body and metabolism need time to restabilize so the shortest recommended time between cleanses is 6 to 8 weeks.
The MC is good for you, but there is such a thing as too much of a good thing.
Known side effects of long or too frequent cleanses are hair loss and rapid weight gain.
-- If fasting is overused, it may create depletion and weakness, lower resistance, and allow diseases to begin. Certain people are not good candidates for fasting or cleansing. Others may enjoy fasting so much that they overindulge in it and take it beyond the limits of normal elimination, resulting in protein and other nutritional deficits, reduced immunity, and loss of energy. While fasting allows the organs, tissues, and cells to rest, clean house, and handle excesses, the body needs the nourishment provided by food to function after it has used its stores. I did the fast for the first time Jan 3-9. I pretty much stopped on the evening of the 8th due to obligations.
I just started again yesterday and plan on doing the full 10 days. Is that too soon? I'm not highly toxic at all, but I've been very stressed and feeling very anxious and sluggish internally so I decided to help myself out with a cleanse.

Hi, I have just joined, and I'm seeking guidance on this topic too, as my situation is relatively complicated. Unfortunately, I meet all the criteria you outline here, and I am a 55-year-old woman who is in awful condition. I think I probably have rheumatoid arthritis, I've been struggling with increasing pain and disability for years, and in the last few months, after a bout of "walking pneumonia," my strength left almost completely, the pains in my legs started into my arms, neck and back, and I am in 24-hour pain and debility; Flu-like symptoms have been a problem all along, but are worse now, and I am exhausted very easily. I have experimented with alternative cures for years. I actually did ten days of the lemonade cleanse a number of years ago, and it was fine. But I'm pretty fragile now, and am wondering if I should modify it a bit. I have a strong spiritual practice of some 30 years, and am guided in this, but I do not have insurance, and am fairly sure I know what my doctor would say anyway if I suggested this. I wonder if it would be almost as good if I were to use the lemonade throughout the day, and eat a large salad or something like that at night; organic veggies, etc. Perhaps this would lessen the shock? I really feel I need to take drastic measures, and was happy to find this forum, because I feel there will be support here. All suggestions appreciated!

Hi Eklutna,
I think the best bet for you right now is to start slow. Start by cutting out all meat and dairy for a week. Then going raw. Then doing juice for at least 3 days. Then start the cleanse. Your body will start detoxing from just cutting out meat and dairy and even more so when you go raw. Doing it so slowly gives your body the chance to start detoxing and to adjust over time and lessens the possible shock. It also helps you build up self control and start taking a walk in the right direction to help your health.

Hi, My first nite to join and review the site. I,too am soooooo very frustrated and now after reading the cautions, am afraid I SHOULD NOT START THE MC!:( I had spine fusion L4-L5 surgery Jan. 3rd and have been and still are on high doses of pain med's (fentanyl & Nocor). I feel like I am so very toxic right now from all the med's and surgery, I just want to MC! I am very constipated from the pain med's, retaining an incredible amount of water from poor circulation (injury to artery) and I feel like a cow! I wanted to do the MC so I could feel more like who I use to be. What will I experience if I do the MC while still taking the pain med's? I am slowly weining off, but that takes time too. The doc says NO to going cold turkey off the med's, says to dangerous. I was hoping to MC and wein from the med's at the same time. What do you think? I could really use a helping hand right now. This is the toughest time I've ever experience and the MC sounded like the answer. HELP!

hi tiniateresa, I'd say no on the cleanse with the painkillers based off what painkillers do to your body and what the cleanse does, it might not be a good combination. i understand how you feel about wanting to start right away, but give it some time. wait until your strength is up and you're on no meds, or at least less meds. I'd give you the same advice eklutna, Start by cutting out all meat and dairy for a week. Then going raw. Then doing juice for at least 3 days.
additional info on who should not fast:
Who shouldn't try juice fasting
* It is important to consult a qualified health professional before trying a juice fast.
* Pregnant or nursing women and children should not try a juice fast.
* People with diabetes, low blood sugar, eating disorders, kidney disease, liver disease, malnutrition, addictions, underweight, anemia, impaired immune function, gout, asthma, infection, nutritional deficiency, low blood pressure, ulcerative colitis, cancer, terminal illness, epilepsy, or other chronic conditions should only fast under strict medical supervision.
* People should not try juice fasts before or after surgical procedures.
* Fasting can reduce blood proteins and change the way prescription drugs react in the body.
People taking prescription medications should consult a health professional skilled in detoxification before trying a juice fast, and should never discontinue or reduce their medications on their own. Taken from http://altmedicine.about.com/od/detoxcleansing/a/juice_fasting.htm
People with life-threatening conditions should not fast, especially those who are emaciated due to cancer, TB, or AIDS. Both Type I and Type II diabetics should be under supervision if they decide to fast, but it is not recommended. Pregnant women, infants, and those with kidney failure are discouraged from fasting. Anyone who takes prescribed medication should avoid fasting because of unpredictable reactions. People with liver disease and anaemia should avoid long fasts. http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AnS/psychology/health_psychology/fast.htm

Thank you so much for your response. I am so very glad I viewed this forum prior to starting my MC. I bought the books, read every detail (where I found the web site) and was already to start. I even did my first tea and tried the salt water (help with constipation) but I realize now, "this is not the time".:o I do not wish this type of surgery on anyone, so very difficult to recover from. I can't decide if it's the actual cutting and drilling of the spine or all the med's you have to take in addition to the surgery. Never for me agian! This isn't the last you here of me either, I will do this MC it's just on hold for now. I will start with the elimination of meat and dairy and move on to raw. I'll hold there until I'm off the pain killers and then slowly start with juicing and then the Big Kahona, "MC":D Thanks again for your response.

sorry to hear about your surgeries. hopefully the change in diet will help you. i truly believe in the healing power of food.
then in a few months, or whenever feels right, you can do the cleanse. hopefully by then you've improved in leaps and bounds.
my best advice for cutting out meat and dairy is to do it gradually. start one day with red meat. and go for a week or 3 or 4 days. then chicken. then fish. then milk and cheese. the good thing is you can use the soy substitutes, so you really won't miss too much. But I'd suggest eventually just having fruits and veggies, grains and beans, and no fake meats etc because they can be tough on your system. but you can get to that point eventually. and then move into raw.
another good idea that worked for me is to do one day a week raw - i used to do raw saturdays which started off as fruit and veggie saturdays then went raw then went juice only. being able to master it for one day really gave me the confidence to know i could do it for two or three.
ooh and research green smoothies! there are some recipes on here in the lemonheads recipe box and just do a google search. they're so full of health and healing it's amazing.
best wishes to you.
check out the raw food faqs.

Hi!
I am a newbie and I'm planning to start the MC for the first time in a few days. I am a bit concerned about my weight though, I am at my perfect weight right now and I am pretty thin; I am worried about losing too much weight or being too thin to be able to handle the MC. Should I be worried about this?? I read that underweight people should not do the cleanse, I don't think I am underweight, but I do not want to lose any weight. (I really appreciate all the info on this BB! Thanks!)

in his book, Burroughs says to increase the amount of maple syrup if you want to maintain or gain weight.
you might lose some in the beginning but it balances out.
try doing a search on the board for underweight and see what others in similiar situations have done.
be sure to also read the books and the general help for newbies thread before starting.

Hey, I am a little concerned
My 17 year old daughter was injured very badly 10 months ago, had brain surgery and was in a coma for 2 weeks, further hospitalization for 4 weeks. She had formerly been an athlete, and since her injuries has been limited in physical activity. She has been able to do yoga, but nothing aerobic.
When I started MC she wanted to join me but I thought she is not ready yet, still taking some supplements from her chiropractor, but no meds. So I suggested she try fresh fruit juicing and natural hygiene practices instead. She has been eating more fruit and fresh fruit juices and limiting the daily hours in which she eats her meals to between noon and 8pm.
She suddenly came down with flu like symptoms this morning, now her skin is sensitive, her legs hurt and she is just feeling ill.
I am wondering if she could be detoxing heavily enough to have such drastic symptoms? Or is it just the flu? I wonder...

I also had a spinal fusion surgery. It's been 2 months and I really feel that cleansing now would be so beneficial for me. I am starting physical therapy and I think that the cleanse will give my body a clean slate to work with and help the healing process. With all the stress from the surgery and dealing with not being able to work and just each day seems like a new challenge. I feel like I need the cleanse to throw out all the toxins that I am carrying around so I can move forward.
My goal is to start with 10 days, but most likely i'll go at least 14, then from there I will see how I feel and how things are progressing for me.
I've already pretty much convinced myself that this is what I need right now and at the very least I know I won't be sitting on the couch eating junk food
I should at least get some exercise from running to the restroom 900 times a day!

I was really torn yesterday as to whether to give her some over the counter flu relief. She was really suffering, but did quite well getting a ton of fluids down. But she was feverish and shaky in addition to the pain and congestion. I finally gave her something at bedtime and this morning her fever is gone and she is able to sleep. I hope it was detox symptoms though, since clearly she has plenty of stuff that needs to be cleared.

I am on day 8 of my cleanse, and I was wondering if it is normal to be sick.....I have been quite ill since day 5, draining sinuses, sore throat, cough, phlegm, the whole nine yards. I have been trying to find information about people that are ill for several days, and if this is indeed normal, or if I should quit the cleanse or keep going with it. I know that to some degree there will be some ill feelings, I guess I just want to know how U tell the difference between detoxing and truly being ill?

Quinsheba - It could be detox OR that you're sick. Most detox symtoms last 1 - 2 days (in my experience...others may feel differently) But even if you're sick, staying on the cleanse till you feel better is the best thing.

Quinsheba - it's most likely detox. Please read the General Help for Newbies thread, the Detox Stages thread and the Healing Crisis thread to gain a better understanding of what's going on and why you shouldn't stop cleansing until you feel better.

Thank you very much for the feedback. Because this is my first cleanse, I wasn't sure if it was supposed to feel this bad. I have been following it fairly flawlessly, so I figured this cold was probably related to detoxing, and I do intend to see it through, I didn't give up food for this long not to reap the rewards of this cleanse. :D

Hi
I was wondering the same thing. How often is to often? I did my 1st mc December 30-January 10. Then I went on vacation. I tried to eat well but I did drink and eat meat. So I did another mc from January 31-feb 22. I felt great during and after both mc. I have not eaten any meat and only very limited dairy and I have tried to eat allot of raw food. 3 weeks ago I got a serious upper resp infection and my Dr. insisted antibiotics. I have felt bad ever since. I also have started have menstrual problems. So I started another mc on April 29. So I am on day 4 and doing well. (On day 2 I had a very bad headache.) Now I am concerned that I have started to soon? Should I only do 10 days? I really see so many benefits from the mc. I hope I am not counteracting all the good it does.
Thanks for any advice

hey carolynheadache
sorry to hear about the headache.
Please be sure to read the General Help for Newbies thread for info, tips and what to except.
- the first 3 days are usually the toughest
- headaches are the most common detox symptom in the beginning, many have been known to have migraines, especially those who enjoyed caffiene on a regular basis before their cleanse
- non-prescribed medicines are not allowed on the cleanse but there are many natural remedies you can try instead
- it will get better
- increase your lemonades, or just your maple syrup
- increase your water intake
Everything is covered in the Newbies thread in more detail.
Give it another day or two and see if it gets better. I'm almost certain it will.

carolynheadache Hang in there! I've had migraines for several decades - I was on Relpax & Imitrex and never left home without them. My first MC cured me of them. To get to that cure, I suffered several days of the worst migraine I've ever experienced. But the SWF's helped. I've written a few posts about my experience, so I won't belabor it here. OK, I started the sennae tea last night, and after an hour i threw up. I cannot stand the taste of it, and my stomach ached all night. This morning i attempted to drink the salt solution and could only get half it down. It makes me gag and i border on throwing it up as well. I would consider myself to be quite a healthy person, and do not eat a lot of white flour and sugar at all. I grew up eating very well, mainly chicken and potatoes, never sugary items. I am very good physical condition. I know i need to flush, are there any other options. This whole thing scares me to death. Also, will i be able to continue teaching my fitness classes while on this or will i feel to crappy and will i lose muscle mass while on this cleanse? I can't really afford to lose weight on this.

Okay so I've been on the cleanse since 5/8. Actually I started on 5/4 but by the end of the day after experiencing the dizziness, I called it quits. So I picked it up again on 5/8, starting from scratch. Today is day 4 and I must admit this morning I was ready to throw in the towel. I mean, the lemonade is good. I've been having frequent bowel movements as predicted. I'm not hungry, but it's sort of like having toast everday all day for 10 days. Afterwhile your mind begins to shout enough toast already. Well my mind keeps popping up images of spaghetti, sauteed veggies, even an apple..anything but this lemonade....all in all I'm hangin in there...6 days and counting.
someone PLEASE remind me why i'm doing this again:eek: :)

scared2death - First have you read the General Help for Newbies thread (link in Peanutterb's note just above). It gives pointers for making the tea and the SWF easier. For the latter, you can alter the temperature (I like mine really warm; others like it chilled); drink it with a straw; see the thread for other ideas if you're interested.
If you have read that thread, then perhaps this cleanse isn't for you ... at least, not right now. I thank my lucky stars that I've tolerated this cleanse well because I fit to a "T" the description of someone who should take this easy. I jumped right in and have had miraculous results. It's a fabulous cleanse, but there are others that allow your body to ease into cleansing and don't involve either the SWF or the senna tea. For example, a group on this board have started a 30-day Raw food challenge. It's not as hard as you might think to eat raw for a month ... or even a couple of weeks. It's a lot of fun. The difference in detox, since I think that's what you're looking for, is that it's much milder, but takes a little longer to work thru your system. For example, I had sinus drainage on and off during the Master Cleanse, but it was pretty constant when I was eating raw, for the first 2 weeks.
To answer another of your questions, you could look at the Exercising while on the Cleanse thread. I always keep up my exercise while cleansing. I cycle (spinning), lift weights, etc, but with perhaps fewer weights, longer breaks. It helps with the constant feeling of being cold, and seems to keep my muscle mass intact.
Hope that helps. Good luck finding the right cleanse for you! :D Let us know.

I have a similar concern...today is Day 1 for me...I got food poisoning on Friday nite and knew that it wasn't completely out of my system when I started the Cleanse, but I figured that would be okay since I REALLY wanted THOSE toxins out. But I've seriously had probably 20 BMs today, and most of them were entirely liquid. Should I have started the Cleanse? Should I put it off for a few days?

Waytoomany! Yikes! I had food poisoning not long ago and I feel for you. If I were you, I'd cleanse if you can tolerate the cleanse ingredients because, Your body is already Naturally trying to purge the toxins out of your body and THIS IS GOOD! Better out than in! Probably a pain in the "you know what" for you but really, get it all out. :) *hug*
irondawn: This one is a toughie because none of us are qualified to diagnose, treat, or recommend what someone should do when they have a medical condition and this one sounds serious. She might want to "google" enlarged heart + dieting or something like that. She also may want to get a 2nd opinion on cleansing. Sorry I could be more helpful.

Help. I'm on day 3 and have been vomiting all day. Can't keep anything down. Only managed to get down half of my SWF, so then drank smooth move tea... lost all of that. Haven't kept any lemonade down today. Very weak, tired. Just managed at 5:00 to keep half a cup of peppermint tea down.
Do I need to quit? I have eliminated only once or twice today and very little. I'm coming off 3 years of Lexapro with my doctor's permission. Peter advised me to take it easy, but don't know if this is wise or not.
Thanks for your help!

That's not good. Did you stop the presc meds for the cleanse? Did you stop just recently? Doing the cleanse and stopping the meds at the exact same time may not be a good combo.
Any prescription medication is actually toxic whether or not it helps your condition. I take armor thyroid and always take it when I cleanse. So really, I'm putting something toxic in while trying to detox but somehow or another it actually works for me.
You're most likely detoxing too fast. Peter's right - you do need to take it easy.
If you're constantly sick I recommend stopping the cleanse and giving yourself a few days or so to start feeling better. You're probably better off doing fruits/veggies/salads for a few weeks, then a Juice fast (lots of green juices) for a week or two and then trying the cleanse again.
Don't be discouraged. A lot of people have to ease into it. I hope you feel better soon.
Keep us posted on what you decide and how you're doing. *hug*

Okay i'm on day six... I lost five pounds. I'm a little overwieght, but not extremely... 5'2" -- 127.

This morning I felt awful!!!! I've been loosing an average of 1 lb a day. Today I GAINED 4 pounds and felt bloated in my face and hands. I guess the obvious thing is that maybe I'm bloated... But still 4 POUNDS?
I am so discouraged... and I feel a little sick... and I feel like getting off it... I don't understand and read up on the SWF... I'd like to know if anyone else has experienced this before?
PLEASE HELP BEFORE I FALL OFF THE WAGON.
Also, I've been exercising and since the first day of loosing 2.5 lbs, now I only loose about .5 lbs a day... (not including this 4 LB craziness).
HELP!

Skinnygirl,
The SWF should never be done at night!
It's to be done first thing in the morning, on a completely empty stomach, or not at all. Because of exactly what you experienced!
If you don't do it in the morning, then you need to substitute a senna laxative tea.
And then you do the tea again at night.
Please read the Instant Answers link (above) and the first few pages of all the sticky threads on the forum. You will get lots of information. Please also read at least one of the books: Burroughs or Glickman. It's very important that you do the cleanse properly to get the results you want.

Thank you so much for replying!!!!!!!!!!
Okay, I've read the book and haven't read anything specifically about these symptions... I have done the SWF at night... when I get home from work and it has worked out... I won't do it again.... but I'd just like to know WHY this happened.
And considering that this is day six... I just assumed my stomach is pretty much empty at this point?????

thank you, thank you!!!!

Hi. This is my first MC and today is day 9 for me. However, I am a Type 1 diabetic, insulin pump user. For the past few days I have been having a problem with my sugar bottoming out at night.
I have been doing the tea (Smooth Move) at night and adding a few Tbsp of MS trying to prevent the sugar drop, the SWF in the morning, and having usually 10 LAs during the day. I tried to do less but find that I get too hungry and have to have them. I have been taking insulin for 10 grams of carbs for each serving of LA.
My insulin pump gives me insulin at intervals thru the night and I really thought it was the insulin. The low sugar numbers have been steadily getting worse each night. It dropped to 42 night before last and then last night it dropped to 33. It woke me up before I had received any insulin from my pump so now I'm wondering if the tea could be making it drop? Anyway, I ended up eating a small piece of cake and several pieces of chocolate. Do I need to start over, stop, or what? Any suggestions would be helpful.
I started at 234.8 and dropped 10 lbs in 5 days but the last few days I have creeped back up 1.5 lbs.
I did tell the nurse at my doctor's office that I am doing this and she said she wouldn't tell me not to do it but she's sure my doctor would say not to... but to just be careful. I do that anyway. After all it's me fighting this terrible disease.

Hallo Peter and Everyone on the boards
I am on my first day and am finding it very difficult not becauze of hunger, but I have pain all on the lower part of my belly and sides. I am wondering why this would be 2nite it has been so bad I have been doubled over in pain. I did the SWF today but nothing more than usual where BM is concerned could the pain be becauze of this or becauze I am very toxic.
Good Luck to everyone staying focused and doing this.

Hello,
This is my first time on this site. I have read everything. I bought Peterīs book and really want to try this. I have not yet started but the other day I tried just the Lemonade drink, then the next day I tried just the smooth move tea and the day after I tried the salt water flush and It seems just fine.
But, I canīt make myself put it all together. I feel like there is clutter in my head and I canīt make things clear.
Iīm feeling really tired all the time. I know that cleaning out the gunk inside and resting will help to reset things for me.
Looking for advice.

Well, it's certainly true that you won't get any benefit if you don't do it, and do it altogether, and do it for at least 10 days, but it's also true that there's no reason to do it unless you really want to.
Maybe you should just keep reading here, and thinking about it, until you do feel ready. At some point you just have to get all your supplies in place and take the plunge. :)

Grinder,
It shouldn't be a problem doing the MC, and it might help.
One thing you might want to do is use raw organic agave nectar instead of the maple syrup. And try to drink a lemonade at least every 2 hours, more frequently if you need to. Drink plenty of water in between lemonades, too.
Have a good one!

I haven't tried Agave yet. But I know that using slightly more maple syrup works to keep my blood sugar up. Try 2.5tbsp instead of 2. Don't expect as much weight loss doing that though.

I am not an expert so anyone contributing to my comments are encouraged to do so if I am misleading here.
If I was in your shoes, here's what I would take into consideration. How long has it been since I did drugs? Am I drinking right up to the day I start the cleanse? I would go to the main forum
http://therawfoodsite.com/forum/index.php
and click the search link, put in alcohol and/or illegal drugs, and read and read.
I have a history of the illegal drugs (yes, I am a flower child of the sixties). From what I've read in the forum, there is always some residual of every drug you have ever taken in your body. I tried jumping right into the MC and couldn't get thru one day. I then did raw food diet for about three weeks, and took daily baths in epsom salts so my body would start to detox thru my skin. Now I as I am on the MC I go to the health club's steam room as often as possible to detax thru my skin so not all the toxins go thru my kidneys and liver on their way out. I think I was ridding myself of one drug about two nights ago as my dreams were specifically of doing that drug at a party. I haven't done drugs in over thirty years, but that dream was lucid. You can also juice fast which is a milder fast for a little bit before starting to see how your body handles it.
I wish you the very best with your choices.

Hi, I am on my 6th day, its not hard to stick to, but I have been having the worst headaches since day 2, sometimes they are splitting and other times just annoying, I am extremly over weight, but as I just lost my father to cancer, I am not wanting to check out and put my sons through what I have been going through. Not much still on eliminations, mostly all liquid, I am only doing 6 drinks a day, swf in the am and smooth move tea in the pm, also about 100 oz of water during the day, but I would like to see some bigger results, if you get the pun, my Mom is doing the cleanse with me at the same pace, but she is very tired all the time and just wants to sleep, she is also gaining and not really flushing much (another pun). We are very determined to stick, I only need to loose about 200 more lbs to feel myself again, (kinda of a pun, ;)), but any thing else we can do besides stick to it?? Thank you so much.

Newbie here! I have a few questions I am hoping to get help with. First of all I do not do the herbal laxative tea very well so I have substituted slippery elm bark
powder as a tea. Is this OK or will it interfere somehow?
Second, this a.m., my second day, I threw up all the SWF. I am not having a problem getting it down - it just did not want to stay down. When this happens am I to try again or not?
Third, yesterday I noticed that I got incredibly thirsty and dry-mouth despite all the fluids I am ingesting. What does this mean?
For those of us that are health - challenged are there certain warning signs we must heed to know if we cannot continue to do this cleanse?
I had a cold/flu for the few days preceding the fast, during which time I could only get some lime-water down and I felt so much better after that I decided the MC would be good for me. I have a problem that I bloat up from lots of things ingested - not even sure what - my gut just always has an excuse to bloat. I was feeling nice and trim after the flu but then I start this MC and bloat up??? Why?
Finally, I have read that this should only be done 3 or 4 times a year but other writings have indicated to me that I can do this more often. I have alot to cleanse so I will probably wish to do it more often. I need guidance as to how to tell how often I can do it.
Last but not least, my husband is a type II diabetic and I wish for him to take some time off work and try this one of these days but he really really hates molasses. I will look for the agave syrup at our local HFS but not too sure about that either. I am very concerned about his sugar and not wanting to make him sicker.
TIA!

Hi Peter,
Today I am on day 4 and feeling like i have the flu. My legs and lower back ache and starting to just move all over. It's 4:54pm EST. and I'm now on my 13th glass and in between drinking water. I wake up and do the SWF and end the night w/ the tea. Please tell me this will pass. I read that bathing in epson salt will help, however, I only have a shower. Anything else i can do?
I also developed a head cold as of last night, but that i can live with.
Thanks

OK "24 hour a day, 7 day a week support network of over 20,000 people". Where are you?
I have a question about tumors. I had a tumor on my adrenal gland and it and the adrenal gland needed to be removed. Then I got a large painful bump in my back. For years the doctors would not answer me as to what it was and would claim to be unable to feel it even though any layperson could. One day the bump got huge and inflamed and a piece broke off and traveled around the outside of my body and then down towards my privates. When it got in the stomach area it went further in and I could feel the pain of it but could not physically touch it. The doctors say that cannot happen. So now, finally one year the doctor calls them lipomas. As far as I am concerned they are tumors and now I have a bunch in my back and the smart one that came around the front side has now had a bunch of babies that they call ovarian cysts.
Anyways, these bumps do not act up unless I have been eating alot of junk food. Now on the fast they are acting up. I have read that sugar is food for cancer tumors so I am wondering if I should quit the maple syrup part of the MC? Or can I consider the acting up of being inflamed and painful as part of detox? Or are they getting food from my cells that are releasing toxins?
Some help here would be appreciated.
TIA!

I'm 22 and on Day 4 of my first cleanse. So far, minus some sporadic fatigue, I have no aches, pains, or other detox symptoms. I'm drinking about 7 glasses of lemonade a day, doing the laxative tea at night, and the SWF in the morning. Should I be having more symptoms? Is there something I'm missing?

I posted this on the Master Cleanse Board 2008 What day are you on and how are you doing thread but am posting it here to try to get a response ASAP.
I am on day 9. I am really concerned because I was doing great until day 7 when I started feeling really lethargic and STARVING.
I have done everything by the book .. 12 - 14 oz lemonade (1/2 freshly juiced organic lemons and 1/2 grade B organic maple syrup) and 1/2 tsp cayenne with at least 48 oz distilled water daily. Senna tea at night and SWF (2 tsp iodine-free sea salt in 32 oz distilled water) in the morning. I've eliminated almost straight liquid since 2nd day. Before day 7 I was doing my regular workout routines - walk dogs 1 mile twice daily and lift weights and jog 1 mile a day. I also sat in a sauna for an hour on day 5 (I sooo recommend it!!) But now I am exhausted and did I mention STARVING?? My tongue is not clear which indicates I am not detoxed but it seems my body is saying EAT!
Please help!

Does having done recreational drug use effected anyone?
I am about to start my cleanse on Monday and am afraid when the toxins release, I may get high again.....which i DO NOT WANT!!
Also, will my detox reactions be severe because of prior drug use?
Any help would be great!

Well, if it's still in your system you want it out. Not sure what will occur when it's sucked out of your fat and moved into your blood stream for elimination. You may want to start this on your days off.

It has been a pretty rough first day. I have a bad headache and feel somewhat nauseous. I am trying to finish my fourth glass of lemonade before bed.
I have taken a lot of ephedra/caffeine diet "supplements" over the years...stacker 2 etc. I can't help but think that may have something to do with how I feel now even though I'm not taking them currently. Before I began the cleanse I was drinking 2 cups of coffee a day...so certainly expected a degree a caffeine withdraw but this is a lot.
Good thing I didn't have to go to work today. Hope some relief is insight.

However if you follow the 2009 thread you'll see the same thing posted from hundreds of other cleansers. They'll tell you to tough it out.
Take a hot epsom salt bath. It's very soothing. :)

After reading many, many threads, it seems that I am in the category of those that need to take it easy. I wanted to detox. I started at 200 lbs, lost 5 lbs in 3 days, then stopped losing weight. I felt terrible through Day 7, had lots of aches in my back and hips, headaches every day all day. I was drinking 6 glasses of lemonade and some (not enough) water. I finally cheated on Day 7 because I couldn't take it any longer. I continued with the cleanse, though. I am just starting Day 8 (but I know that I am really back to Days 1-3 because of the cheating).
After all the reading, I see that maybe all of this is because I am more toxic than I thought and the cleanse will take longer.
My question is this: would it make sense to stay on the lemonade but add raw foods to my diet? Without actually leaving the idea of the cleanse, can I continue to drink the lemonade as part of my diet, eat raw foods to gently detox, drink the tea and swf? Would this change my ability to do a full master cleanse this summer? I know I will also need to add lots of water to this as well.
So, can I continue the cleanse with added raw food for 3 months and then start a full cleanse?
Res
April 26th, 2009, 11:35 AM
Swips: Although it "appears" to you that you stopped losing weight, you are probably losing "inches". It's weird but it happens. The fat cells actually release the fat (weight loss) and then collapse (inches loss) so this is good. Don't be so concerned about the scale. Your body is getting rid of toxins and that's really whats going to make you look and feel much better. It just takes time and the weight WILL come off.
Be sure to go for at least 10 days by following the cleanse to the T. If you opt to use lemonade for a modified diet go ahead and do so but adding food to the cleanse ends it.
You should only do the cleanse 4x a year.
I hope this helps.

Thanks Res and sadsak39 for responding to me. Unfortunately, I went off after Day 7. I realize now that I was probably just dehydrated (got this from more reading). I am happy that I made the 7 days, and without the headache and yuck feeling I am sure I could continue - not really hungry, but weak and sore. I have read that h20 helps move those toxins much more, and the toxins inside my body were what probably made me feel so bad. I had read before this that h20 was an option if hunger was a problem (and it wasn't) so I probably wasn't drinking enough.
I am now on raw foods - no bread, dairy, meat - and will continue until July when I will do the cleanse again and for however long it takes to complete.
Thanks for your support; I look forward to seeing how everyone does while I wait it out.

SWIPES: I will tell you from my experience, I did the MC 4 years ago not on a raw diet and my detox symptoms were much worse than this cleanse (I am on day 4). I have only been raw/vegan for 4 months and I've had no headaches, my breath is not horrible and my tongue is only slightly coated. I have done 6 colonics this year as well. I will never go back to eating SAD. Switching to raw foods did present detox symptoms, for me a lot of fatigue, some rashes, but after 2 months it got easier. It's a slower detox no doubt but gentlier on the system and one you can do if you have a hectic life and don't have a lot of time to rest. GOOD LUCK ON YOUR JOURNEY!

"Nothing tastes as good as slim and healthy feels"
I tried to start up on the Master cleanse this morning and within 3 hrs I was ravenously hungry and felt faint and achy and needed my coffee.......sigh!......I gave in.
I think I need to prepare more before the detox.
I havent eaten cheese or milk for the past three months, no acohol, dont smoke now, cut down meat and started to have some vegetarian meals etc...and lost 22lbs by following a High Cholesterol Eating Program. I am no longer loosing weight and feel rather lethargic and stiff body wise and in a mental fog.
Lately I have not been enjoying my food and the taste is blah!........I feel like I want to eat raw foods like fresh fruit and vegetables and feel that the detox will prepare my body for this transition.
Any suggestions for the next week to enter this transition stage would be most helpful.........
BTW I drink 6 small/2 huge cups black coffee first thing in the morning to get my body and brain moving so that is a challenge to cut back on.

Hi Valentine, and welcome!
You're doing fine. You should drink a minimum of 6 glasses a day, but add more only if you feel hunger or low energy or other detox symptoms. Lots of people stick with the 6 per day. Just know that you have the leeway to add more if that starts feeling right.
Happy cleansing!

Hi Eklutna,
I think the best bet for you right now is to start slow.
Thanks for the tips there............I have cut my coffee intake by half and will cut it out totally before I start the detox next week or possibly the one after that if I do a week of raw foods.
I am having no meat and dairy and stopped chewing gum also (does that include yoghurt ............?)
I am having the herbal Smooth move tea at night already

Hi All,
I'm on day 4 and have been having a hard time with what I hope are de-tox symptoms. My legs are killing me; aching like I have the flu, but I have no temp and no respiratory symptoms. I've been drinking the tea at night and doing he SWF in the AM and having about 8 - 10 glasses of the lemonade per day. I do usually have poor blood circulation in my legs and feet (always cold) could the toxins be pooling there? I'm worried because Peter says to stop if your symptoms don't go away after the next morning's BM and mine haven't. I'm kinda thinking about pushing the water today to flush out. I don't want to quit, but can't go on aching like this; I can't sleep.
Any suggestion?

Hi All,
I was ending my 2nd day on MC today and gave up. I had SEVERE HEADACHES since yesterday and couldn't function. I was unable to do anything for my family and within a half hr of eating something and taking some pain meds the headache finally subsided. I also noticed that I became nauseous everytime I finished a glass of lemonade. I do have a history of migraines so I started eating raw about a year ago. I am about 60-70% raw which has decreased the frequencies of the migraines. Is there an easier way to ease into this cleanse?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello- I did the mc last year and loved how I felt and was really impressed with the results. I want to do it again, however 6 months ago I was diagnosed with bipolar disease. So I am on 1800 mg of Lithium. I have people tell me its ok to do the cleanse and others say it may not be ok. I dont want to ask my doctor b/c I live in a small town where people are not open to things like naturapathy, homeopathy, and fasting/detoxing, etc. He would probably automatically say no. What do you think? I would really appreciate any insight or advice.

:confused:I have been doing this all wrong I think....I had my 5th knee surgery on September 21 and two weeks later my ortho doc approved me to go on the MC. I've struggled with it and quit a few times already because I get horrible headaches and pains in my legs and need to take my pain medicine, but the MC detoxes them out and I'm left in pain. I need to succeed at this to prevent a knee replacement in my near future. I am wondering if I would be better off just sucking it up and dealing with pain, and hoping I don't end up back in ER or if I should try to ease into it. Outside of my migraines, knees, and weight I am fairly healthy so I feel ridiculous having so much trouble. If anyone has any advice I would appreciate it greatly!

Oh gosh, yeah forget it. I can't even walk around the block. I'm one of those and it sounds like you are too.
I usually forget about the movie theater for the duration of my cleanse unless I'm RIGHT NEXT to an exit that has close access to a bathroom. lol.
So, what did you see at the movies? :)
Hey yall! I am new to the site and today is my 3rd day of the cleanse. Does everyone experience having to use the restroom everytime you drink the lemonade or water. I ALWAYS have to eliminate. Went to the movies twice and was unable to sit through the entire movie without having to go! Any thoughts???

I am desperate for some advice from anyone who can give it. I am doing the cleanse now for the second time, I'm on the 4th day, and I literally have NO energy. I walk up my stairs a couple of times, and I'm tired. I put clothes away, and I'm tired. Today my arm got heavy while I was brushing my teeth and I am not joking; it felt like I had been holding it up for hours. I'm a 33 year old female vegetarian (going on 5 years) and I'm in pretty good shape, but I have many many allergies. If I had to count them all, the number would be over 25 and possibly up to 40. I wasn't breast fed as an infant and I think it has a lot to do with that. Anyway, I'm extremely close to breaking the cleanse right now, and I don't want to. I know I'm one of the ones supposed to be "taking it easy" but this is ridiculous. Please give me some advice because I really, really need it. Thank you so much in advance.

This is very likely detox, and if so you REALLY want to get that out of you! Do take it easy--which means just let yourself be tired when you are, and don't try to push yourself more than your body wants to go at the moment. It's only 10 days, so you have only 6 left. I've had cleanses where I felt just like you, and then the very next day (or sometimes it took longer) I was more full of energy than I'd ever been. Each person is different, each cleanse is different, but detox runs through them all. If you cave now, you'll just have to go through this again on your next cleanse. So just accept it and let your body start to heal. That's what it's trying to do--it just doesn't look the way you want it to. It needs energy to heal, and if that means you do nothing but rest for the foreseeable future, then that's the kind of support you should give yourself.
However, chances are it'll pass soon and you'll get some different detox symptom to to crazy over. :D
Hang in there, and happy cleansing!

Okay I have hit a BIG roadblock with my cleanse. I am on my 6th day and I am living in the dorms at college and the rumors have spread around my hall about my cleanse. It has caused a lot of drama and people that are misinformed about the cleanse are very angry at me about my decision. They have talked behind my back saying very nasty and rude things and it has resulted in several fights. Basically in the past 6 days, half my hall has lost respect for me. I know that I am going to stick with the cleanse but my stress levels have gone up tremendously and I really really do need support from you guys to let me know that people ARE there for me!!!
Thanks to all... I'm just really upset lately..

Hi Kristen,
Why would they disrespect you because you decided to detoxify your body? Do they think you're suffering from anorexia?
If that's the case, show them some websites about the Master Cleanse so they don't judge blindly.
Keep up the good work!

Unfortunately they do think it is anorexia, and they will not take the time to do some in dept reading on the cleanse. In fact, although I have shown them the book they insist I got the idea "off of Wikipedia"! Another sad thing is that its like 20 girls all ganging up on me and there is nothing I can possibly do to make them stop. This has caused me to completely lose trust with anyone on the floor with what I tell them and I have decided to not talk or associate myself with them for the rest of the year, including my room mate.

Also... I think I should cut the cleanse a day short. A couple symptoms I have been experiencing today are not the normal ones. Fast heart rate, shortness of breath, faintness, and possible hallucinations. Since I am so close to 10 days I figure if I am having these kinds of affects now that it is no longer detox symptoms but could be signs that my body is not working properly. I was really striving to make it all the way to 10 days but know if I choose to take that extra day it could lead to serious problems including hospitalization....

Awww, thats really horrible to hear. The important thing to remember here though is that you are enlightened, its a place of being that many people will never understand. Its like the free clean feeling you get from a very relieving session of yoga... some people just aren't into holistic health and they will never understand it. Too bad to hear about some of the effects your having, I might go out on a limb here but it sounds like they are completely stress related, anxiety based, I get these things a lot when there is drama going on around me. Remember that we are all one in the world, some of us see that, we all care for one another even though we are complete strangers, life holds a common bond, that we as women will always share together, I hope you know that I'm sending you happy thoughts, don't let others judge you. This is just a small time in your life, when your done school you will be on your way to a bettered life, these trials and tribulations only make us stronger better people in the end. :) Namaste. I just wanted to add that, myself being a health freak, being a healthy weight, a lean weight... most people who are close to me probably think that this is eating disorder related for me as well, but I'm not going to let it get to me, this is to get me on track and feel good about my digestive health and get a clean slate to start on.

Hi Ebbs thank you for the quick and helpful response! I decided to cut it the day short, I still feel very proud and I have no regrets over missing the last day. I just made some ramen chicken broth and had a few slices of an orange and feel much better. I definitely agree with everything you said and it probably was due to the big amount of stress lately, and I am planning on getting more in touch with my body as the year progresses by eating healthy, starting yoga and palates and continuing my time at the gym.

Hi all,
I started on the cleanse on January 6, and things were going along as expected. I had all of the standard detox symptoms; congestion, headache, fatigue, irritability, white tongue. It helped me stay on it because I believed it was working. When I finished the 10 days, I binged, couldn't control the cravings. I figured I wasn't done or that wouldn't have happened, so I went back on the cleanse.
I've had chronic sinus problems forever, so when I experienced a lot of mucus drainage I was not surprised. My ears became clear (they had been plugged for so long I didn't know it could be this good!) and my face was not as tender. But now, it seems to have stopped, and it even feels like I'm producing more mucus as I drink the lemonade, similar to how it feels when one drinks a glass of milk. When it was all draining, I also had a cough and what felt like an upper respitory infection, a wheeze in my chest, etc. I just figured it was more drainage and would clear within a few days.
The weird thing is that when I binged (2 days) the cough went away. Some of the congestion came back, but has seemed to clear back to where it was before the binge. The cough is mild, as is the pressure in my chest, but I don't understand why it hasn't gone away. I've been back on the cleanse for 3 days. Is this more than a detox symptom? I'm concerned that it has lasted so long and the healing seems to have stopped.
Thanks for any help!

I've been considering the MC for a couple of months but it has never been the right time to start. I got food poisoning on Friday and am recovering on liquids, have yet to eat anything. I'm wondering if this is a good time to begin the MC because a) I'm used to not eating, and b) it may get rid of any remaining bacteria, etc. in my tract that made me sick in the first place. But, maybe it would be too much stress on my system and I should wait awhile before beginning. Thoughts? Thanks!

HELP!
My response is for both Eklutna and Tina. First with the meds. Very, very slowly wein yourself off. There is no rush. I was using 30 pain pills a day. I very slowly went down to one a day, than a half every other day so that by the time I got to zero I felt no withdrawals or side effects. A few years before that, I went cold turkey and just about jumped out the window. So, point being slow and steady. As for the master clease, I've been doing this for 25 years; anywhere from one day to 46 days in 2007. And it was NOT any easier until I decided to try something new. Stop ALL meat. Stop ALL dairy and eat ONLY fruits and vegitables for a 7 day week. I don't care how much you eat, just eat them with plenty of water for the entire 7 days - Monday - Sunday. The 2nd week, eat ONLY soup that YOU make from vegitables and if you have to add flavor to these vegitables soup, then add Sea Salt ONLY. Plenty of delicous soups you can make. Do this also for 7 days. The entire time of course you are also working on your mind get it ready to do the Master Cleanse. After the 14 days you will slide right into it with your body responding VERY quickly. You will feel flu type symptoms due to it riding itself of meds, meat etc but that will ge gone in 3 days or so. You will NOT have an appitite and IF you follow what I did, it should be fairly easy. I'm going for 49 days this time. Also, VERY, VERY important is for your to goodle "The Grape Cure" for when you are done with the MC. Get as much information as you can on The Grape Cure, read, read, read and read. So when you are done with the MC you can slide into The Grape Cure. Good luck and have fun.:D:eek:

I am on day 6 of my cleanse - I have had success with the SWF and have been drinking about 8 servings of the lemonade drink per day including the tea at night - In general I think everything is going well - But I have not lost any weight at all! OK, the reason I'm cleansing is to help get myself back onto raw foods - but I admit I was hoping to get a kick start on the 10 lbs I need to shed. What is wrong with me that I can't lose weight when I haven't properly eaten in 6 days??!

Rawfoodindy:
Perhaps you just need to bump your exercise regime a little. Diet is math. calories in less calories burned = weight change. You are taking in less than 1000 calories per day on the MC program. Are you burining the regular amount of calories or have you become more sedentary than usual?
I find that the Maple Syrup bumps my energy level so much that my daily walk or bicycle ride has increased in speed and distance just to burn off some of the excess energy that I have as the result of the MC. The great thing about this program is that it gives you enegy to burn.

Thanks for responding Stubedoobe - I have indeed cut back on my workouts this week. But I'm so active keeping up with two little kids and cooking cleaning and shopping for the family - I'm afraid of crashing or running out of energy or patience, so I've been reserving my energy for my normal duties, and taking it easy with the actual workouts. Usually I do yoga 3times, cardio/weight lift2times, and swim 2 times per week. This week I've only done one yoga class and one swim. I don't feel like I've got energy to burn - I feel like the lemonade just maintains a steady burn of energy I need to get through the day. But with so few calories intake, shouldn't some weight fall off automatically? Could I be harming my metabolism? Or hurting my body in any way with this cleanse? My guts feel like they've been through a spin cycle with the tea and SWF. This is intense.
