Diarrhea post-cleanse

Hello all-

My wife and I have been done with our first MC for just a week now. While we had very little discomfort during the cleanse my post-cleanse experience has been anything but smooth.
We followed the instructions to the letter about the grapefruit juice and soup. After 2 days off the cleanse I was constipated so I took a couple herbal laxative capsules that I have used before just to get things going. Same day I got diarrehea and that was six days ago and it hasn't stopped.
It was bad enough that I went to the emergency room this morning. They told me I wasn't dying which was reassuring but I'm still perplexed.
Possible causes:
1. I may not have thoroughly washed some veggies I ate the day this all started. (but food poisoning shouldn't last this long should it).
2. The cleanse depleted my good bacteria and I was vulnerable and picked up a bug. That's what I'm thinking it is.

Has anyone had this? Or can offer some advice??

P.S. My wife is fine through all this. The only thing I ate differently than her is those veggies. Hmmmmm...
