Hello,
Has any research been done regarding the lemonade diet and teeth problems?
Many dentists state that lemon juice is harmful to your teeth. I know that when I was a little kid I was dared to hold lemon juice in my mouth for 2 minutes.. My teeth were extremely sensitive for over 2 weeks.. (not very smart :)
I was interested to know if during the prolonged use 10-20 days of fasting.. Do you feel any effects from it? It would also be helpful to know if people who have fasted on and off over a long period of time have experienced any teeth problems...

May have to sip it thru a straw..

I did 28 days my first cleanse and had no teeth problems.
As a matter of fact, my gums and everything felt much better.
So I don't know if the lemons can make the teeth sensetive... maybe others can address this topic differently.

dear Jeremy!

I've been having "sensitive" teeth all during the cleanse. Peter says

"On the teeth, I am only aware of two people out of several hundred whose teeth "hurt" or were sensitive during the cleanse. In both cases, it was temporary. (One of which was my wife.) It is very, very infrequent. I've heard of people saying that the lemon juice is so acidic that you should rinse your mouth or brush your teeth after each lemonade, but I don't think that's the problem for those very, very few people.

I believe that the problem is that they have insufficient alakine mineral reserves (calcium, primarily) with which to neutralize the acidic wastes they are releasing. So, their body has to take the calcium from the teeth and bones! The proper handling is to drink a lot of green vegetable drinks (best natural source of organic calcium) before or after the cleanse to restore the mineral reserves. If the teeth become a problem during the cleanse, quit the cleanse."

also:

"The MC requires an alkaline mineral reserve (calcium, primarily) to neutralize the acidic toxins that are mobilized. It may be possible that a person either has too little to begin with or does too many MCs too close together. When that happens, their teeth get sensitive and hurt and they may lhave some temporary hair loss.

The solution would be to drink lots of fresh green vegetable juice, which is rich in calcium, before or after the cleanse."

I work at a medical research institute, and watching me squeeze my lemons, one guy made sure to tell me that he published a paper in "The American Journal of Nutrition" on the effect of lemon juice on rats' teeth. The short version is: erosion. But that was UNDILUTED. I've decided to take my chances, floss & brush my teeth every day. BRUSHING CAN BE QUITE PAINFUL!

Best of luck!

You are not alone with the sensitive teeth issues.

Its been discussed a while ago, around the time I first started writing stuff here.

drink through a straw and then rinse your mouth out to make sure... if you are that concerned about it. Personally I havent experienced anything close to sore teeth on the cleanse.

good luck

hmmm....

During gradeschool... grades 1-5 my school division made all their students do some sort of fluoride swish of some sort... for 3 minutes a day... I remember it cuz it tasted gawd awful and all the teachers had stupid stopwatches just for timing the swishes...

I don't ever remember my parents consenting to this and there were no kids that opted out of the program...

I've got great teeth... but at what expense???

On my tenth day of MC1, the plaque came off my teeth. It simply softened and I brushed it away. No need to go to the dentist now to have my teeth cleaned. This really happened. In all the fasts or cleanses I've done in the last 36 years, this is the first time the plaque was dissolved. A truly excellent cleanse!

I did the cleanse for forty days and did experience the teeth hurting thing. And only at times in the cleans. But the pain was from the inside not the outside. Consider old amalgam fillings and the toxins left behind and the body sucking those toxins out.

My teeth hurt so bad around day 14 that I could not bare to brush them (I am on ay 33) I was worried because I use TOM's tooth paste. Then I went and bought Tom's sensitive w/o floride! it took a couple of days but my teeth felt better. I can brush them all now with no pain except in one which I will go to the dentist for when I am done. I think the floride mixed with the clease did it. My body was confused why I would clean with poison (floride) when it was trying to detox. I am never going back to tooth paste that contains it ever again!

Hi there Lemonheads,

I completed my first MC five days ago, and I feel wonderful. The only adverse effect I experienced was after about 4 days, I developed an extreme sensitivity in my left front tooth, right near the gumline. I was kind of worried since I have excellent teeth and no fillings. I've never had a cavity, but the pain was like what I imagined a cavity would be.

I searched the boards and found this thread, which was extremely helpful. Based on the advice I got here, for the rest of my cleanse, I drank through a straw and covered my teeth with my lips when I drank. Yes, I looked like a little old lady trying to make sure her dentures weren't slipping, but I didn't care.

I decided to post some followup info that I hope will be helpful to others like me. I went to the dentist today and he told me that the lemon juice acted like the acid dentists use on teeth to etch the enamel when they are going to do bonding. The area by my gum had receded a bit from the lemon juice, and my tooth enamel had been burned, causing the tooth to become porous, and therefore very sensitive. I asked him if it was reversible and he said absolutely - and he gave me a topical cream called MI Paste, which re-mineralizes your teeth and protects them against decay. Also, he gave me some Sensodyne toothpaste and told me to use it instead of my regular Tom's of Maine. I have to let a dab of the MI Paste sit on my tooth each day for about a month, but that is nothing, as we Lemonheads can attest! If you don't have the money to spend going to the dentist to get the MI Paste, you can simply buy some Sensodyne and let a dab of it sit on your tooth/gum.

Happy cleansing,
Ava

Day 13, back of my top rear molar has started to act up. A cavity I didn't know I had. It seems the sugar from the maple syrup is getting up in there even though I'm using a straw! I'm trying to find a way to get the drink past my teeth completely. I think I'll start taking calcium and brushing/flossing twice a day.
