Hey everybody. I love doing the master cleanser. I feel fantastic during and after it.... But, I've lost a noticable amount of hair after doing the master cleanse. I know it's from doing it cause I'm only 21 years old and it is growing back.
I'm just wanting to know if anybody else has experienced this. I've done the cleanse for another ten days and nothing yet has happened. My hair feel out two months after the first time I did it, so maybe they were weak and perhaps if I do it again it won't happen.
I don't know???????????

HI Floppydisk,

I don't know if hair loss is a detox thing, but I found your post interesting because when I was 21 years old my hair started falling out, too. It got really thin, and I was so alarmed I went to the doctor.

He told me that it could be due to stress but also that the body undergoes changes every 7 years and sometimes does things like this. It makes sense because there are major body changes when you are 7 and again at 14. So perhaps your hair falling out is a result of your body's cyclical changes and not due to the cleanse at all.

He told me to use some dandruff shampoo for a while (I have no idea why) and shortly after that, my hair grew back to normal! ;D :D

Hey Floppydisk...

I too lost hair... I thought maybe I was going bald...
Not good being a female...

But it is growing back... so it had to be from the cleanse...Kinda scary for a minute there...

hmmm when I was 20 or 21 ( a little while after I lost my dad to cancer ) I lost a whole chunk of hair on the back of my head.

I second the idea of high stress or the that specific age that makes guys lose hair.

I got that patch of hair back... it really scared the heck outta me.

I was really scared cuz I was watching my highschool buddy lose his hair ever since he was 17... I didn't want to lose my hair, I love my hair...

;D the chicks love my hair too ;D

Isn't losing hair pretty serious, I would look into what you are getting out of the cleanse. I would think your body has to be severely malnourished or in an extreme state to lose hair.

dear aimee and everyone else here:

I also had hair loss-- and-- I don't THINK it is a detox symptom (but stranger things have happened). I did a total of 85 Cleanse days in less than 1/2 a year-- and I think the most likely cause of my hair loss is-- lack of protein-- (which is NECESSARY TO MAKE HAIR!) but hair grows in cycles-- and CAN and will grow back. Also- there are many causes of hair loss-- like you say, mycroftxxx, stress is a biggie-- and anyone here who doesn't have stress-- congratulations--you must be doing something right!

If people would like to email me-- feel free to use my actual email (see my profile) unfortunately-- my bb email is full and I haven't had the time to clean it up.

Best to all on your healing journey!

This is my 4th MC and I've never experienced hair loss. I haven't gone more than 10 days before, which could be a factor, I don't know.

My hair did not fall out but my nails are breaking like crazy. I figured it because of the lack of protein.

I just noticed yesterday (day 4) that mine is falling out more than usual, then I remembered.....the same thing happened when I did a Slim-Fast diet a few years ago (when I obviously knew a LOT less about good nutrition!) and back then after a lot of research I discovered that this can happen when too large a part of your diet is LIQUID. It has to do with the little holes the roots live in receding so your hair is literally falling out because there's nothing holding on to it . (You'll notice your hair is falling out by the roots, NOT breaking off.) This does correct itself eventually, after you return to real eating. So in my humble opinion there is nothing more serious going on than that.

What were your sources of information about this Upstate? I think it's interesting.

I noticed one of the posters here back in April said her hair actually seemed longer by only day 8 of the cleanse!! I wonder if that is possilble.

I'm on day 18/30 right now and I'm starting to worry about this. How long was the cleanse when it fell out? and how long when it didn't? How much hair actually fell out?

hey get up kid, it was my first cleanse which was only ten days. the hair loss began a few weeks after the cleanse and occurred when i was in the shower; it just seemed to be noticeably more than usual. there were no bald patches and after a two weeks or so it subsided. my hair is fine and i never worried about it again. also, this is my fourth cleanse... i am on day twelve and i haven't had that experience since. keep chugging and good luck.

I did my second MC last July & did it for 4 weeks. I felt great to say the least. I started noticing in Sept. or Oct. that my hair seemed much thinner & the texture did not feel the same. I have always had quite thick hair & need to get it cut every 6 weeks. I also thought that my hair was not growing as much or as fast after the MC. I spoke to a dermatologist who thought perhaps I had an iron deficiency. Then I spoke with a friend who recommended Pre-Natal Vitamins (I'm 64 yrs old). Then I saw my hair dresser & he recommended the same because they have a higher dose of B complex. I have taken them for 3 months, am stopping for 2 months & then will start again. I wasn't sure if it was age, but I really think it was the MC. I am doing another MC at the moment but will not do it for as long. I wonder if anyone else has had the hair loss problem.

Hi Floppydisk,

How have you been? I am too going through hair loss ordeal and it is disheartening. It happened to me in exact same way you discribe: Two months after i finished MC I started losing my hair. I finished my MC in end of May, 08 and in end of July started losing my hair and am still losing it. How long it took for your hair to stop shedding? I'd appriciate any info from everyone very much...Thank you for your help.

I am not sure if my posts are posting. I sent already a couple and i don't see them afterwards on here...? Well, i just want to say that I am also going through the same stages. I did MC only for 10 days and then two months after started losing hair. It's been already a month since my hair started falling out and it is still going. I did blood tests just to make sure all the hormonal levels were normal and results did come back normal, so i know it is not for any other reason other than MC. Please help?? Any advice is apreciated. For how long your hair was falling out before it stopped? Did it grow back?? I ma freaking out...it is scary. And it sucks because now i am afraid to do the MC again and i did feel great on it. :(

Anya-

I experienced hair loss after the MC. Similar to other posters here, hair loss began about 2 months after finishing a cleanse. I didn't keep track on a calendar but my best guess is that it went on for a couple of months before subsiding. My hair was visibly thinner but no bald patches or anything weird. My hair did fill in again and I would say it was a few months before looking back to normal again. At the time, I was actually attributing the hair loss to the use of Pantene products. So I did switch to a salon-quality, vegan shampoo when the hair loss was occuring. But looking back, it is probably more realistic to say that the cleanse might have caused this since others have reported this as well. Also should note, I did 2 MC's in less than 6 months...which maybe could have been timed too closely together and again, could be part of why the hair loss occurred for me.

I am actually starting a new MC tomorrow, but haven't done one in 9 months so hopefully no hair loss this time!

Oh and just to add a bit more info...I have only done MC's for 10 days at a time, never longer. My other theory is that my diet was low in protein...as I think sophie suggested. I did notice that when I up'ed my protein, the hair loss started to subside. So its hard to know if it really was MC or just other dietary circumstances. But I do strongly agree that protein level is essential for healthy hair. I am vegan so the way I increased my protein was to start adding hemp powder to my soups. You have to find a good quality hemp powder though because I have heard some of them taste kinda nasty. If anyone wants the brand I use let me know.

Thank you Mismar for your reply,

I sure hope my hair loss will soon sibside as well. In my case, i only did MC once (10 day in length) and hair loss occured so it is def. not because i did too many sessions of MC close together. I hope i won't have bald patches, it seems it getting very close to it though, too much hair is shedding too fast...freaky...

Good luck on your MC! I hope it goes well and no side affects like mine:)

Wow... I too am experiencing hair loss at a very rapid rate. I started the MC on memorial day of this year and lasted 21 days. In August my hair started to fall out in handfuls, and have lost over 50% of my hair in about a month... I felt so good on the MC and had many benefits including shiny lustrous hair. I am normally very healthy and don't think my hair loss is due to stress/thyroid or any other cause, and it is very interesting to see this same instance of hair loss in other MC users. I am going to the dermatologist in a couple of days and will mention the MC connection.

I havent actually done the Master Cleanse yet, but I know that if hair is falling out/thinning there is a shampoo/conditioner that I LIVE by (I am 25 and I dye my hair ummm every week or 2. my hair is very weak/fine) I know that it is typically recomended for cancer patients to re-grow their hair (and detox the hair!)

its called Nioxin. If you are interested, you can look it up online (its sold in beauty salons or online) they have different systems based on how thin your hair is, how much you are losing, and if you are chemically treating your hair.

I actually recently found a "generic" version which is half the price but seems to be just as good its called nutri-ox from naturelle. They sell it at Sally Beauty supplies stores (and on the website if you cant get to the store) here is a copy paste of one of the products (There are a lot more -systems- of it in the store then their are online btw):
"Nutri-Ox Basics Cleansing Shampoo uses potent nutrients and proteins to stimulate and nurture healthy hair growth. Compare to Nioxin System 1 Cleanser for Fine Hair and save. Perfect for use as a daily shampoo, Nutri-Ox cleanser creates an optimal scalp environment for fuller, healthier-looking hair. Formulated with a strong blend of nutrients, proteins and humectants, it gently removes product buildup, environmental pollutants and toxins like DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) from the hair and scalp."

I think its a really good idea to pair this (either the generic or the brand) shampoo up with the master cleanse! why not detox your hair while you detox your body! And, if you start getting dandruff or an oily scalp from the cleanse, this should do wonders to help unclog all that muck faster!

Im not trying to push products at all, but I really think this might help some people who are concerned with hair loss.

Sophie (and others). I have been thinking about this alot. I have been doing some research on it. I agree with you, I think there is a good possiblity that hair loss accurring during stress or during a cleanse can be a result of those things.

Consider that what people do a cleans, they are stirring up all kinds of toxic chemials into thier blood stream, lymp system and other vessals of the body. The hair roots receive thier nurishment from this nourishing oxygen rich blood supply, if that supply becomes reduced through cholesterol blocks reducing the flow through this very small blood vessels or if the blood plasma has a toxic chemical in it, it could traumatise the root, perhaps shocking it from it's cycle or lessenning it's necesary nourishment for growth and health.

I have experienced hair loss from both stress and doing a cleanse.

Additionally, with the master cleanse, without vitamin mineral supplementation, there also will be less vitamins getting into the blood stream. This could further the impact of hair loss, perhaps even blurry vission, skin disorders.

I did the MC in July, and noticed shortly after that my hair felt thinner, but I didn't really think too much of it. Until December, when I was at the hair stylist, and she asked me if I had recently gone off of any type of drug since she could see that I had tiny new hairs growing in ALL over my head! They are now to the point where they are about 3 inches long and are standing up all over my head. I was actually gearing up to do another MC at the end of Feb or beginning of March, but now I'm afraid to do it. What if the longer hairs I still have decide to fall out, and all I have left is the baby fine hairs sticking up all over the place?! Being a woman, there is really no way this would look good. Everyone tells me that for hair to fall out this way, something about the cleanse must have been bad for my body, even though it made me feel so good. So I'm very nervous to take the chance and try again. Is there anyone out there who had this happen, and still had the guts to do it again? If so, how did it turn out?

PG: It could be a number of things and yes, the cleanse can contribute to hair loss. Your age can have a bearing on it. If you have a thyroid issue that can cause hair to fall out. Not using a shower filter can cause it as well. Chemicals are a huge culprit as is a poor diet, i.e., junk food.

In between cleanses, make sure you're "nourishing" yourself. It couldn't hurt to take Biotin and consume protein.
