Today was my first day and my first time to do the cleanse and I'm wondering if anyone else deals with acid reflux and what your experience has been? This morning I experienced some of the characteristic burning but it went away and I've been feeling great all day. Would be great if burning gut were a thing of the past! Thanks so much.

it can be... Mine is gone...
Although depending on how severe your case is... It may take longer...
Did my first MC for 28 days....
No problems with keeping to a good diet and not eating after 6 in the evening...

Thanks for sharing your experiences. The burning is bad tonight and it was last night too, and I'm thinking of taking Pepcid AC or something. Can I do that and continue the cleanse do you think? Love to hear if anyone has knowledge of this.

Mycroftxxx's experience with heart burn in point form ;D

1. Mycroftxxx introduced buddy to MC

2. Buddy wanted to try MC

3. Mycroftxxx Gave buddy recipe and website to look at info

4. Buddy decides to make a monster batch of lemonade at once

5. Buddy puts waay too much cayenne pepper in monster batch

6. mycroftxxx tries some of buddies monster batch

7. mycroftxxx gulps 3-4 cups of extra strength cayenne lemonade

8. mycroftxxx gets tummy ache

9. tummy ache lasts for 2 days

10. mycroftxxx not happy

11. buddy not happy

12. buddy quits MC

13. Mycroftxxx even less happy :(

Mycroftxxx says extra cayenne + lemonade = burning! :P

14. writing in point form doesn't really save time

15. mycroftxxx finds posts in point form rather amusing

16. mycroftxxx is tired now goodnight.

I am sooo glad you responded. I noticed another posting of yours and loved it. I even viewed the video that you recommended sort of.

I don't think it's the cayenne, but thanks for the thought. It went away shortly after I posted on this site and it hasn't returned and I didn't resort to drugs. I wish you could have heard the huge sigh of relief I just heaved.

So day 3 for me and onward.

Lots of gratitude!

Anyone had any problems with acid reflux? I feel it is because of the lemons and all the acid in them. I had this problem with red wine and tomato suaces prior and now I am getting discouraged that I am having it on the cleanse. This is my third MC in three years- I do it every year, but this is the first time this has occurred.

Any suggestions?

I had done the MC last Oct-only went 4 days. I was having heartburn so bad it almost made me throw up. I'm now on Day 3 and the heartburn started up again last night. Any ideas? I am used to eating 'lots' of cayenne pepper, so I can't believe it's from that. Thanks - otherwise I'm feeling great. Have been doing landscaping and feeling fine.

Well, Day 4 is almost over and I haven't had ANY heartburn today!! I'm so glad. I'd still be interested if anyone has any ideas though - the cause and help to relieve.

I'm not familiar with heartburn during a cleanse, but I know that if you take a spoonful of apple cider vinegar it will probably take care of the heartburn.
I learned that from Kevin Truduau's informercial regarding his book - "Natural cures They don't want you to know about".
I gave the advice to a friend who had been living on pills for the problem, he tried it and was quite shocked at how well it worked.
Apparently its not too much acid that's the problem, - its - not enough of it.
The stomach isn't able to break down the food with the acid available and you get heartburn.
The apple cider vinegar apparently has just what is needed.

i wouldnt be surprised to hear if apple cider vinegar works... but saying that heartburn is caused because of not enough acid is totally wrong. heartburn aka acid reflux is caused by a muscle, not too much or too little acid. i think either the muscle contracts or relaxes, which allows the acid to rise up into the esophagus.

Thanks for the vinegar suggestion. I know that would be better than Tums or stopping the cleanse. So if it doesn't hold off (like it did all day today) I'll give that a try.

I have GERD, which is chronic heartburn, and last night (Day 4) it was so bad I skipped the laxative tea and had ginger tea instead. Ginger tea is one of my normal remedies, but I'm sad to say it didn't help, so I took a Tum; that didn't work either. I was about to eat some crystalized ginger (another remedy I use consistently) but decided not to.

Apple Cider Vinegar will kill me if I try to take it. Even now, day 5, I'm still having heartburn issues. I took the cayene out on Day 3 but the heartburn was still present, so I put it back in. At this point I don't know what else to do and I feel as if the acid is burning a whole through my throat.

If this persists, I'm going to have to stop and I don't want too. I'm planning on doing the cleanse for 21 days (this is my first time) but there is no way I can tolerate this level of reflux pain. I feel as if permentent damage will be caused.

Any other ideas?

I'm having the same problem. I took the cayene out because it was making the heartburn worse. I've tried ginger tea and baking soda in water, neither worked. Tums have worked but I think they are just masking the problem.

I don't know what else to do either and getting very discouraged. I'm on day nine and it's been happeing since day 4.

I'm on day 9th n I'm having the same problem!! I've been having heartburn very frequently for the last two months. This was a major reason for me to do this fast, the heartburn went away at the third or fourth day of my fast, and I kept the recipe the same. Today n yesterday I've had heartburn again, n I hate it so much...I might stick to the diet till sunday because I get heartburn with regular food anyways, but hopefully this is not cause I have an ulcer. I'm hopping that washing out toxins will help my problem. Is there a point in which I should stop the fast because of heartburn or should I suffer thru it. I forgot to mention that I got really upset yesterday n this morning that could be another reason for heartburn!!

I am just ending day 6 today and I have been stuggling with my gerd/acid reflux acting up the past few days. It doesn't seem to bother me during the first part of the day....it tends to hit me around supper time. I have quite severe burning that is extremely uncomfortable. I know you are not supposed to take anything on the MC that isn't one of the ingredients, but what would happen if I took an antacid? Would I have to start back at the beginning of the MC again? Would it really throw things off? I don't really want to take anything, but if the discomfort becomes unbearable....I am not sure what else to do! And I definitely don't want to stop the cleanse! HELP!

If anyone can give me some answers, it would be greatly appreciated.

Be well and keep on squeezing!!

dear Katie:

Congratulations for making it to day 6!

I wouldn't want to tell you what to do under these circumstances-- and I'm SURE that must be mighty uncomfortable! What I would say-- given that I don't have any specific personal experience with what you're going through-- (at least not on the Cleanse-- although I myself have had bouts of acid reflux...) or enough expertise to really address it (hence please use your best judgement-- and hopefully someone else might say something valuable) is that the cleanse has a lot of difficult moments-- and often puts us through some real challenges-- especially those connected to our own specific weaknesses. Ie for example-- I struggle with allergies-- and I had some very tough instances-- having to do with TONS of mucous--pouring out of me....

In your case-- if you ordinarily have difficulties with acid reflux-- it sounds like it might kick in and give you problems. However-- something interesting to consider-- is that it isn't only about not wanting to quit the cleanse if you take an antacid. In Victoria Boutenko's "Green for Life" which I got through this bb (I don't know if it is still being offered)

also see:
http://www.rawveganbooks.com/index.php?cPath=97_109

she goes into an extensive discussion about how having insufficient stomach acid is a serious problem...

Much of what the cleanse can do for you-- has to do with "resetting" your body. It is a complex thing-- but your body-- when digestion gets turned off- has an amazing way to recover its best functioning. It could be that it is a bumpy road-- and it is for most of us-- but I think you will find-- that if you can persist through some of those tougher moments-- you will be glad you did. I'm not saying it is a piece of cake. Another thing-- is-- as unbelievable as it may seem, given that lemons are ACIDIC-- their effect on the body is ALKALINIZING. Our bodies really like to be in a very narrow "window" of pH-- which measures the acid-base relationship:

see
http://www.regaininghealthnaturally.com/Sickness_and_Disease/Acid_&_Alkaline_Balance_in_the_Body.shtml

and in our world-- all too often we get thrown to the "acid" end of the spectrum-- particularly on a western diet-- which emphasizes things like: meat, cheese, dairy-- all of which "acidify" the body. Another thing that I think Boutenko may mention-- and if not-- it is still a very interesting fact-- is that cancer cannot SURVIVE in an alkaline body. Vegetables-- and a raw food diet encourage the body to naturally become less acidic...

All of this is small consolation-- I'm sure-- if you're feeling awful acid reflux-- but if you CAN hold out-- and in fact-- GET OFF THE ANTACIDS-- and onto a raw food-- and GREEN SMOOTHIE lifestyle--in the long run it would probably help a great deal.

That being said--- I hope use your best judgement in these difficult circumstances!

Best of luck to you on your journey to optimal health! :)

Hi Sopheesta,

Thank you so much for your response and your input! I really do appreciate your feedback, it has been very helpful. ;) I was really trying ot hold off on having to take any antacids because the reason I am doing this cleanse is to detox my body and try and free myself from that vicious cycle and get all of the junk out of my body (antacids are really not good for you!) I realized that part of the problem was the cayenne was irritating the acid reflux. So, I have temporarily cut back on the amount of cayenne I was using. That did seem to help the problem and I didn't have to resort to taking any antacids (which was really the last thing I wanted to do!) YAY!! I will start to increase the amount of cayenne I am using as I can tolerate it, I know it is important to the cleanse.

Yesterday was day 7 and I was experiencing severe allergy symptoms! Itchy, watery eyes, sneezing, coughing and lots of mucus. I have seasonal allergies and I haven't really had any symptoms since the end of May, but yesterday I was obviously detoxing and the allergies came to the surface. This cleanse certainly is interesting, not to mention challenging! LOL :D

I am going for 10 days for sure and then will see how I am feeling and decide whether or not to extend my cleanse then. I am hoping that I can do 14-20 days!! I know the longer you stay on it, the more benefits you will recieve in the long run. But as they say, one day at a time. :) What is the longest time period you have done the MC for?

I know that eating a healthy diet once the cleanse ends is just as important as the cleasne itself. I am planning on eating more fresh fruits and veggies, way less meat (I can't go totally raw or vegetarian at this point, it would be too difficult!) I don't really eat much dairy right now....the odd piece of cheese here and there or milk on cereal on occasion. I will start eating nuts as a source of protein as well (I love nuts). BTW, what type of nuts do people ususally eat? I would also like to explore the green smoothie choices, they sound very interesting from what I have read.

Thanks again Soph....I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my post! You are truly helpful!

Be well.....

Take care,
Katie

I stopped taking my GERD medication when I started the cleanse. I’ve never been able to go more than a day with out it because of really severe muscle spasms, headaches, and chest pains from GERD. Everything was fine until last night the night of day 4 and I’ve been up for 12 hours now with sever pains and esophagus spasms. I feel like throwing up but I now that won’t happen. I suspect the cayenne didn’t help so I’m easing off a bit. At this point I don’t know what to do but stop and start my medication again because I feel like I can’t breath. Any suggestions_

Hi Katie101-
What's GERD and is it a wise thing to quit taking meds?

I thought that I was suppose to quit taking my one med (Armour Thyroid), but I was mistaken; supplements are not to be taken.

Yeah, if you want to stay on the cleanse but need your medicine it is perfectly fine to do both. I believe if the time came that your body no longer needed Rx medicine, it would let you know and that would be a good time to ease off, but until then, baby steps...

Res
August 7th, 2006, 09:09 PM
Katie: Get back on your meds. As October stated, the only thing to stop taking is supplements, i.e., vitamins, minerals herbal supplements.

Even though I don't have GERD and usually NEVER have heartburn, I do experience it on the cleanse periodically. So I'm not surprised you succumbed to it.

You probably already know this, but after drinking the lemonade, don't lie down. Stay in an upright position for about 30 minutes or so. Hang in there Girl. :)

Keep us posted on how you're doing.

Love,

Hello, I am new to this forum and on day 3. I suffer from GERD with a little Barretts Esophagus. I have been doing fine until now. For most of today though I have had a little heartburn. Should I be concerned over this or just push on. I am hoping this MC will not only clean out my body but also help to reset my digestive track and give me some motivation to eat better which in the end will take care of my GERD.
Thanks Slickyc

hey there and welcome to the bb!
i don't really know the answer to your question, usually on the mc things get worse before they get better and old illnesses and pains come back. but i don't know much about gerd or barretss esophagus.
i know it's been mentioned on the board before however so i did a search and here are the results.

most all symptoms you have during the cleanse are directly related to your body healing itself of ailments. If you have reflux/heartburn, it is going to be bad during the cleanse as your body is purging what is causing the ailment.

you may have to fast for a longer period of time, but eventually, the theory goes, you will rid yourself completely of the ailment. Then you need to make lifestyle changes to keep the heartburn away.

i would recommend perservering, no matter how hard. A week or two of pain is going to give you a lifetime of relief! It's hard but just keep that in mind.

Something that I do before a fast is to set milestone markers, and if I pass each one I get a reward. Eg after 7 days, I'll treat myself to a new computer gadget. After 10 days, I'll book a day at the spa (for after the fast), after 30 days a trip to Vegas (haven't 'won' that one yet....)

hi queensharon

I guess-- after writing back to another (old unresponded to) post on heartburn, I thought I should come back here to yours. I'm NOT sure I can have anything helpful to say-- other than I too experienced heartburn- and it was terrible. I also just now-- tried a search-- like peanutterb was saying and-- maybe-- since she's the one who told me how to do it-- I'll pass it on to you: just go to the "search" option on the top bar. When you click on it-- if you use the "Advanced Search" you can leave everything as is, type in your keyword, but also (so you don't get entire threads) go down to the bottom LEFT and where it says "Show Results as" click on "posts".

Best of luck!

Hello All,

I'm new to the cleanse and followed the gallon recipe a friend sent me today and boy is it HOT. It's not the taste so much that worries me as that I have GERD and erosions in my esophagus. I take prevacid 2x per day for this, but I can just feel my stomach burn when I drink the lemonade. According to the recipe I was given, I am using 8 500mg capsules (opened and poured out) per gallon of lemonade.

Can anyone give me advice about this? I generally like spicy food, but I can feel this burn all the way down and for a while after I drink a bit. What is the least amount of cayenne I can use that will still be effective?

Here is the gallon recipe I was given:
1 cup organic lemon juice
1 cup organic grade b maple syrup
4 grams cayenne pepper
(I have a gallon jug so I just pour out a couple of cups of water and pour in the ingredients and shake.)
Please let me know if this is incorrect in any way.

I know that my body is super toxic, I eat meat and dairy products in huge amounts, smoke, take medications, am overweight... the works. I've read that my fibromyalgia might be caused by candida too. Hopefully this will help me get started toward being healthier.

Thanks,
Diana

Hi Diana, here is the MC recipe
If you want your final result to BE one gallon, here is the recipe:

1.5 cups fresh lemon juice
1.5 cups grade B maple syrup
One rounded tsp. cayenne pepper
Add all ingredients to a 1 gallon jug/pitcher, and fill with water.

the longer the cayenne pepper sits in the drink the hotter it gets. Most folks add it per cup and the amount can vary to taste. I added mine per drink. Some take a shot of it in water, then drink the lemonaid. You can vary the MS and the cayenne to taste, but not the fresh lemon juice.

be well

I have also had a lot of heart burn all through the fast so far. Today, which is day 5 I began to belch as well. As this is my first fast I have no idea if it is normal or not. I hear that going off the fast is really important or you will get gas and have some cramping. :(

Hi Everyone: I can't say if it's "normal" or not but I've experienced it on a few cleanses and it's no picnic. :( I've been "up" at night as well. I did keep going because it wasn't occuring "every day". It hurt bad enough to want to quit though. :)

Make sure you don't lie down for at least 30 minutes after downing a lemonade. Drink "water" because it helps move it all out and HANG IN THERE. :)

I, too, had horrible heartburn that started on day 2. It eased up on day three and then came back with a vengeance during the night of day 3. I was up for four hours that night and spent a lot of time reading this bulletin board and thinking, "this can't be good for me--I'm stopping."
Did I have acid reflux? Was there too much stomach acid? Did a have a blockage in my liver bile duct? Was I just having a reaction to the lemon juice. Who knows--there was so much input. But, what I DID was to drink four mugs of hot water--which eased the pain a little. Then, aha! I made a cup of peppermint tea and took a hot epsom salts bath. TOTALLY eased the pain. It's nearly 2pm on day 4 and I feel great. I am SO relieved. :) So, you might try the peppermint tea and bath.

i too have always experienced problems with heartburn and indigestion. exacerbated by hunger and oftentimes soothed after eating and/or scarfing down the maximum amount of tum's allowed until able to eat. i am on day 3 of the cleanse and have had heartburn since last night. which worsened during and after my 12th serving. i have a little over 16 oz. to go before finishing off my morning batch. and will definitely drink a cup of peppermint tea as suggested directly after the last swig. thank you for your advice. best of luck to all!

I haven't done the MC yet but hoping to start on 2/21/07. I've had heartburn for several years but a couple of years into it went to the doctor who put me on Prilosec which fixed it like MAGIC. I couldn't believe how nice it was not to wake up at night with acid in my throat anymore. Well, last year, I started experiencing it again even while on the medication and my doctor gave me a couple different medications to try and I found that Prevacid worked great. No more HB at all! It really is like a magic pill.

I'd recomend that anyone experiencing bad HB see their doctor and try one of these medications. Serious HB can cause a lot of other bad side effects like ulcers, ulcers in your esophogus, trouble swallowing food because your esophogus is scarred and doesn't flex like it should, etc. From what I've read about the MC, they say to continue taking prescription medications during the cleanse so it shouldn't be a problem. I'm actually hoping that completing the cleanse may help or reduce my heartburn to the point that I don't need medication anymore.

I plan on starting my MC for Lent this year (I am Catholic). I suffer from acid reflux, but it is only brought on by strawberries and bananas. If I avoid these fruits, I am ok. However, I still have no idea why these two fruits give me acid reflux.

My question is this, can I take regular over the counter acid reflux medicine (Zantac/Pepcid) if the lemon drink bothers me?

Note: My father got me interested in this. I saw him do the MC for 31 days and he lost 47lbs! It also helped clear up his psoriasis to a degree. This is truly an amazing experience that I cannot wait to be a part of!

Hi Res,

Peter states throughout his book and on his CD that you should continue to take medications prescribed by your doctor. I wouldn't think it advisable to counsel anyone to quit taking their prescribed medication without getting their licensed practitioners approval.

so it's day 4, and i've had my acid reflux acting up since day 2 began. it burns unbelievably bad, i couldnt even down my swf this morning because my gag reflex was "activated and ready to push anything tht came in out". i was planning on doing the cleanse for at least 20 days to a month, but i havent had acid reflux in over a few years. it's driving me nuts. i cant even drink the lemonade anymore because of it, one thing i do know is, if i havent eaten (previous religious fasts) i get acid reflux..

im indian, so i KNOW for a fact that the cayenne isnt bugging me out. i eat spicy food on a regular, and the only 2 things that give me acid reflux are.. pizza hut's pizza sauce... and not eating for a long period of time.

i was not only doing this cleanse to flush the goop out of my body, but to lose some weight, and i've gone from 140 to 133, and it makes me want to keep going, but this one issue is making me want to ween off.

im open to all forms of help at this point. if i decide to ween off, would i have to wait until tomorrow? because i dont think i can wait any longer =[

another thing. i took my prescription acid reflux med... and it's just as bad, not any better.

I had my gallblader (GB) removed (laparoscopically) two weeks ago due to chronic cholecystitis and dozens of cholesteol stones. I would like to start the cleanse this weekend. Since the surgery I find that I am very constipated. Any advice on this topic or know how the MC works on someone without a GB?

Hi Everyone, This is my third Master Cleanse day 2. Yesterday was a really rough day for me because of an extreme case of heartburn after cconsuming 4 cups of the lemonade and setting out on a walk with my mom. I walked about a mile and a half fine, and then the heartburn set in. UGH!!! I had to stop every block or so and sit down because the burning was so bad on the way back. My mom confessed that she had bought the extra hot cayenne pepper. So, it may intrest you to know there are different "heat" levels of cayenne. I also used twice the amount of cayenne last time and did not have a problem since the cayenne was alot more mild. Good luck! P.S. Today Ifeel fine no nausea or heartburn...using much less of the hotter cayenne today.

I experienced what felt like pretty severe burning in my upper stomach at the end of my ten day cleanse in july. I got a UTI on day 8 and had to be put on antibiotics, which I think was the cause of the pain. Anyone else have experience/knowledge regarding this? I am planning on a second cleanse and don't want to go through that pain again! Thanks:)

I am a long time user of Prevacid (30MG a day) which has suppressed my chronic heartburn. I am interested in trying the MC, however I know that within 30 hours of getting off of my Prevacid, I will undoubtedly experience pretty severe acid reflux. Question, can I continue to take the Prevacid while utilizing the MC method?

Hello Everyone,
I am new to this site; however, I am not new to the MC. I have done it about 5 times since 1990. I am concern about doing the cleanse again because the last time I did it was about 6 years ago for 34 days. It was not hard; however, I did not end it properly. I didn't have any side affect from eating solid foods too soon, but what happened was I started gaining weight real fast about 10 lbs per month. I was going up one dress size a month. I was eating right, exercising, and drinking plenty of water. It really scared me. I went from Dr to Dr. they couldn't find the problem. I finally paid a private Dr. to do some test and he found that I had a sluggish metabolism, adrenal fatigue, hormone imbalance, high cholesterol, lost muscle and became flabby, and other minor things. I had never had a weight problem before. I was doing the MC to stay healthy. Now I have corrected all the previous ailments; however, I need to release the 40 Lbs I gained. I would like to do the cleanse again, but I am not sure whether I will have the same problems again.

A nutritionist had told me not to do the fast because I would lose muscle mass and get flabby and I did, even when I was exercising. Does anyone have any advise for me? Thanks DeeB

Tomorrow begins day 9 for me. This is my first MC. The heartburn/reflux is KILLING me! I have had severe heartburn for the last three days with little to no relief. Drinking water is a quick relief but doesn't last but a couple of minutes.

I've read over these posts, but still can't determine what I can do to get relief. I plan on continuing the cleanse for about 13 more days, but need relief quickly.

Please advise.
Thank you!

Hey there..Looks like we are about on the same page. I started today, January 6th and am planning for 14-18 days.
This is my second cleanse but I had the worst heartburn/indigestion today. This time around I decided to do the cayenne capsules, for that was the reason I only made it to day 9 last time around I think. had minimal results. I took the capsules and could only get through one glass of tea all day...only about 30oz of water too. Im guessing its the capsules..they are 600mg each...how many should I take?

This ISN'T recommended on the cleanse but I don't remember Burroughs mentioning what to do for heartburn. I go through it periodically too so I feel your pain. Pre Cleanse I was taking 2 TBL apple cider vinegar in 8 oz of water and sipping. It actually works and it's healthier than most of the other remedies. All the NA are in agreement that it's acid reflux.

Make sure you're not lying down after drinking lemonade.

I've done the cleanse many times and am experiencing heartburn for the very first time these last few days. I'm on day 19 so I'll probably quit soon but I haven't figured out anything that will take care of the problem.

To me it feels like the lemon as I had a few drinks without the cayenne and still experienced heartburn. If anyone comes up with an answer, it would be nice to post it in the newsletter.

This is my 2nd cleanse, day 14 of attempting 50. My last was 40 days. I was on meds for high cholesterol and nexium. I quit both when I started my fast and when I finished before I ate again, I went to my doc for blood work to check my levels. All had dropped down to normal levels. Now two years later I also have high blood sugar (I love candy and sweets!). So, when I get off this fast I will get the blood work done again and try to eat more responsibly. I am never hungry on this fast.
I only would like to eat! ;-)
So, now when I'm bored, I've been scouring the web sites for healthy & vegetarian recipes. I copy & paste into my folder of recipes to try when I eat again. I'm amazed at that I know no one that could or would do this for more than a week, yet they'll do all sorts of unhealthy things to their body to lose weight. And they worry about me when I feel even better now than when I started! I sleep great, have more engery and losing a few pounds. What could be better?

The best way to get rid of the heartburn is first to get to know what type of foods or drinks cause you heartburns. Thereafter, you can keep away from them. Some of the foods that are known to be heartburn triggers include the citrus fruits, raw onions, chocolates, peppermints, black pepper, carbonated beverages, spicy foods and many more. Some bad eating habits are also among causes of heartburn. For instance, you may experience heartburn if you go to bed just immediately after meal. Else, a combination of some foods and distractions during eating can result to heartburns.

I had heartburn so bad today, I was actually throwing up on bile. :< My mother was all, "I told you this would happen" as I have problems with citric foods ie oranges and such. I ended up having to eat just to stop the pain and it was almost instant relief. So, I'm afraid this is the end of the MC for me. And the heartburn was just one of the problems :<
