Victoria Boutenko has a wonderful new book called Green for Life. It supplies the missing nutritional puzzle piece for vibrant good health by going beyond a raw vegan diet with something everyone (meat eater or vegan or raw foodist) can drink, like and benefit from. Her book reveals major health imporvements where a quart per day was consumed as documented by a study done in conjunction with a medical doctor! :D

She discovered that our diets (even raw foodists) lack sufficient greens and proceeded to work out smoothie recipes that taste good enough for anyone to drink to handle that deficiency!

My wife and I have tried two of them so far. They did lessen or remove my cravings for bad food, increase regularity and improve my sleep. (This was right after a MC.)

I have ordered a case (60) of the books for the Web Store, have already sold 2, and should have them in stock on Wednesday, January 18 ($14.95).

These smoothies are made by putting the ingredients in a vitamix (or a very powerful, very sharp blender).

Mango-parsley
2 large mangos
1 bunch parsley
2 cups Water

Peach-spinach
6 peaches
2 handfuls of spinach leaves
2 cups Water

Mango-weeds

2 cups Water

Strawberry-banana-romaine
1-cup strawberries
2 bananas
½ bunch romaine
2 cups Water

Apple-kale-lemon
4 apples
½ lemon juice
4-5 leaves of kale
2 cups Water

Kiwi-banana-celery
4 very ripe kiwis
1 ripe banana
3 stalks of celery

Wow, this is great! I noticed the book on her site, so I was conscious of it. When I'm ready to get it, I'll have to order from you.

Thanks for everything you do, Peter, this board is fantastic!

lol. They only taste good because they're hidden by fruit.

My first green smoothie was a bunch of random greens thrown together and blended. Great gag reflex activator.http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/wuerg/vomit-smiley-015.gif

One that I like is,
Made with 1 can of pineapple, 3-4 gala apple's,
and 3 bannana's- blend, split in half and to each half,
add a balance of red leaf lettuce and romain and a touch of kale.
Strawberries are a good add in.

Ofcourse if your not used to the darker
green's
Go lighter on the green to fruit ratio
even if its just a pinch of them in
each smoothie.

With or without the green's added
this is one of the best smoothies that
I have ever tasted!

It'sMyLife: Here here... heh. :) Paul Bragg (of Bragg's Liquid Aminos) gives a few recipes in one of his books to start out with (mild greens) because of the gag reflexology idea. http://www.freesmileys.org/emo/sick006.gif Not everyone can start out with Kale\broccoli\swiss chard juice. Ugh, another one that kills me is; make a salad with all your favorite veggies and pour on your fav dressing, then put it in the blender. Eat it with a spoon. gulp... I know people do this, but the consistency and the way it plops out of the blender had me taking deep breaths so I wouldn't gag. Needless to say, I never ate it. I couldn't! No offense to anyone who can do it. :)

Dear Res:

Victoria Boutenko had some very interesting things to say vis a vis this-- during the conference call!

Basic idea: to combine the "green" juice with FRUIT to make it palatable. interesting to me-- because not having read her book-- found that mixing my green juice (which I used to do prior to the Cleanse...long term) with some apple (and believe it or not-- with whole lemon-- INCLUDING the pulp & rind)-- really helped-- but she says to add-- like BANANA (I know Peter's posted a bunch above), also to keep the fiber (="smoothie")-- and that as such-- they're really quite delicious.

i ordered the book on green smoothies... prior to the conference call, but now my interest is truly PIQUED.

too tired to write much now,

love, s

Hi Soph: I really like bananas but got tired of them in smoothies. And somewhere I read that adding the sweet fruits or even sweet veggies (carrots, beets etc) defeats the purpose of the green juice. Everyone has an opinion. ;) I have so many books with the authors on opposite ends. I just follow what makes sense to me. However, I'm always open to a new opinion. :)

While looking through Paul Bragg's book for juice recipes I came across a few cool things, I really like this quote:

"Men do not die, they kill themselves". - Seneca, Roman Philosopher

Something else regarding exercising:

SHALL WE EXERCISE DURING FASTING?

This is a question which only the faster can answer. If during a fast there is not inclination for physical activity, then you should not exercise. Ths fast is giving you a physiological rest and unless there is tremendous overwhelming urge for physical activity, you should rest as much as possible. Your body is using all of its vital power for internal purification but if you should feel during a 7 to 10 day fast that you need some stretching or walking respond to the urge by all means. It is between fasts and in your daily program of living that you should spend a portion of every day of your life preferably in out-of-door exercise. ~Paul Bragg

Of course, he's writing about water fasting. Interesting though.

hey Res:
thanks for writing back to this...

part of what she said-- was that she thought of adding the fruit because the smoothie WITHOUT the fruit made her nauseous and she couldn't digest it--but also because she was thinking about chimps (who are our close cousins, genetically speaking! :) ) she said that she found out that they eat about 45% greens, (which was a surprise to her, given she thought of them as eating fruit) and that they often "sandwich" their fruit inside the greens. apparently, she tested these smoothies out on people who had low acid ( HCL) as was she-- and it worked to elevate their low HCL. she also said that low HCL had a host of symptoms including bloating, poor digestion, flatulence, hair loss in women... and that many people have these symptoms.

finally, the reason she thought to do all this in the first place was that her family had come to a "plateau" with the raw food, and she was trying to figure out what their diet needed... and she figured out that greens were the highest in all the important nutrients: amino acids (protein), minerals, vitamins...

the hard part for me- is to figure out how to get "smoothies" made-- I'm not about to get a vitamix.. (I don't think) and the health food store uses a regular juicer.

i also read something about how carrots etc were "high" glycemic....and not to juice 'em... but hey-- I've just done drinking a whole GALLON of maple syrup & I'm working on #2! yea, don't know WHAT to think -- but it was interesting!

thanks for the Seneca quote-- is that a hint? :)

and about the exercise... yea, been thinking about it-- ever since I saw your other post. the frightening thing (to me) was that I WAS SO LOW ENERGY-- that I thought I might have caused it when I laid off exercising (deliberately) last week...(worried my muscles were atrophying). i finally went for a walk (in the woods) Saturday, and besides being unpleasantly cold-- I really had a hard time moving!

today was even WORSE! i felt like my muscles had no "UMPH" for at least the first part of the day-- but since then-- better... maybe i'll say more elsewhere.

yea, water fasting-- is a whole 'nother matter! part of why this is so TERRIFIC in comparison... i'm just now getting a wiff of imaginary food. wow!

I may not have taken this as you intended, but I Laughed My Head off in light of some of our conversations and took it way out on a limb. http://www.freesmileys.org/emo/happy051.gif

Re: Sophesta and Res's comments on excersize:
The first 10-day fast I completed, I excersized 45 minutes each day (moderate to high intensity "Spinning" bike classes) I had little problem as I evacuated prior to class and found it easier to consume that salt water since excersize can make you really thirsty. I live close to the gym so there was no "toilet" issue following the salt water intake. I must say, however, on the 7th day, I had no energy and could barely make it through my spinning class. I was so wiped. The teacher asked if I was ok. So I basically kept low intensity and "went through the motions". Interesting., huh.
I decided this time to take it a little easier. Still going to spinning class, but only when I feel I have energy. Been on the fast 4 days now and went to class 3x, two of which were low to moderate intensity classes.

Green smoothies are excellent!
My favorite is to make a wild greens smoothie from:

1 Mango
A large clump of wild greens, generally including any combination of whatever is available, i.e. dandelion, plantain, nettle, violet leaves, raspberry leaves, chickweed, yellow dock, lambsquarters, etc... (a good wild edible book may come in handy)
2 Tbl. flaxseeds
1-2 tsp spirulina
and enough water to blend smoothly!

I dont have a vita-mix, so I just use a standard Oster brand blender ($40, not $400). It works fine for me, just add enough water and blend a couple minutes, then ENYOY! mmm...
