Dear Dedicated Green for Lifers,

I ended my MC last Friday. I can't say it was by the book: I started eating right away (after a 52 Day MC)--instead of doing a day of orange juice, and then another followed by vegetable stock....

But all went well, at least at first, with respect to the issue that concerns me now. I had to restrain myself from writing ODES about each BM: the first was MAJOR-- a synphony in coconut brown, a hairy diffuse mass. The next, more delicate, long and entrail shaped, a light nearly translucent green (from the avocados I'd eaten) and so it went, each having a unique character--till the fatal day: I had been awaiting my Vita-mix with great anticipation. I wanted to start on Boutenko's green smoothies ASAP! I didn't just order one I ordered TWO--convinced that radical change was not possible, without radical change: I thought to  BRING ONE TO WORK and have it at the ready for travel as well. I even bought the special smaller quart size pitcher for this purpose.

I ended my fast last Friday, the Vita-mix arrived Saturday, (the day mom was released from the hospital.) I would dedicate my SUNDAY to getting  STARTED on my new path of making green smoothies! I spent the day outdoors, running, then at the gym swimming, I had a great big spinach salad, and bought the ingredients for my first smoothie: organic kale, blueberries, bananas, blackberries, kiwis...

I never used the Vita-mix before, so I watched the video, I read the start-up manual...I cleaned the thing-- I prepared my ingredients--and MADE MY FIRST SMOOTHIE! At first it wasn't sweet enough- so I added more bananas, a total of 3 to give it a tasty smooth consistency.

I didn't drink it all at once-- just ONE CUP, the rest I saved for the next day, bringing it to work with me in a fancy airtight sealed jar, designed and made in Italy. It was about 2 cups worth, and I spooned it out during the lab meeting. MMMMM it tasted good--although it was not as lush as say-- eating a mango. This was Monday.

Calamity struck-- when was it-- well first Tuesday morning-- I had a tough time moving my bowels-- but still THEY MOVED. I went to the gym, and weighed myself on the digital scale-- and I actually weighed LESS than the day I ended my MC by a pound! All seemed well enough-- but as the day progressed-- by early afternoon-- I knew I was having a problem! I spent the better part of a 1/2 hour to 3/4 of an hour in the bathroom-- I was definitely constipated. It reminded me of a story someone told of her first pregnancy-- how she tried every position... Well there I was in a thankfully private bathroom, trying EVERY POSSIBLE POSITION-- mainly squatting-- But all to virtually no avail.

The stuff that eventually came out-- slowly--painfully-- was the DENSEST stuff I'd ever seen! It was clearly GREEN, dark GREEN, and it was a fine dense, intense thing! The water was practically completely extracted.

My theory is that the Vita-mix certainly does keep the fiber-- but it is ground so fine-- that it stops up the machine! (the body that is.)

Obviously other people have NOT been having this problem, so what did I do wrong? Perhaps I USED TOO MUCH KALE, and TOO MUCH BANANA! Banana can be constipating...I guess so can finely ground kale!

I was highly reactive to my situation. Rather than juice again (this was only yesterday) even though I had brought my Vita-mix to work, I decided to chop & eat the ingredients AS A SALAD: So for lunch I had a large bowl of chopped up kale, apple, blackberries, 1 carrot, and I added a fig & 2 pecans. Over this I dribbled some cold pressed organic olive oil and one full lemon. MMMM. Delicious to eat!

Concerned that I need even more fiber in my system, I followed that with a late afternoon snack of:
3 oranges
2 kiwis
1 blood orange
and a handful of blackberries

Before leaviing work I also downed a mango, and I might add for breakfast I had had a cup of chopped up cabbage and other "roughage"....

Finally-- and maybe I shouldn't have, for dinner I had another cup and a half of mixed veggies & beans, mostly raw.

I hadn't eaten this much quantity, or volume, to date-- post cleanse, but at this point I was desperate-- so before going to bed-- I had an avocado with lemon having read that avocado was a great source of fiber, the perfect mix of soluble and insoluble...

This morning-- woke at 4 AM-- with intense constipation again! I spent a long time extracting a dense plug of that same "green" highly dense stuff. After that I ate a mango- having read that a mango a day-- keeps constipation at bay!

Well-- i'm far from in the clear- and somewhat upset! I want my new lifestyle to work! Any thoughts? They'd be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, desperately plugged up!

Hi Soph,

I was just on the master board asking for green smoothie feedback and then I came here and read your experience. I'm a newbie to all this (only on day 8 MC1) but it occurs to me that maybe you might do the dreaded SWF for a few days to get things moving.

I think I remember Peter saying that's what he has done when he strays. Not that you have by any degree but it might help get your system going? Good luck. Keep us posted as I would love to do the green smoothie thing as well so I'm grateful for you leading the charge!!!!

Soph,

Sounds like you have been overdoing the fiber! Think about it - for 52 days you have not been ingesting solids, just liquids. Then you cram your system full of fibrous fruits and veggies. In everything I have ever read over the past 30+ years about adding/increasing fiber in the diet, the recommendation has been to do it gradually over time so that your system can adjust. And have you been keeping up your water intake, or even increasing it because of the added fiber? I would suggest that you do the lax tea for an evening or two (maybe even in the AM as well), and when you feel like you've 'cleaned out', gradually start increasing your intake of the smoothies (and make sure you drink plent of water!!)Sometimes, more is not necessarily better! Hope this helps.

:)

Thanks for the feedback folks! *Thorny, even the thought of the SWF (no offense ;) ) makes my stomach turn! http://www.websmileys.com/sm/crazy/1198.gif I DID consider it-- but what I've got is such a major blockade-- that--well--it would take DYNAMITE to get through! Thanks, *Diana, I gotta admit--I've not been drinking enough water--perhaps--but there WAS NO PROBLEM TILL THAT SMOOTHIE! I mean I was turning it over several times a day-- and MARVELING w the output! It wasn't till the smoothie, that that thing-- compactified to a disaster in my colon! Yea, I'll start drinkin, I guess I HAVE TO! I just hope I can get it out of my system w/out having to go to the emergency room! :)

Anyway hava meeting in ten min, maybe I'll get together something to drink. I really DO appreciate hearing back from you-- felt pretty isolated with my problem! http://www.websmileys.com/sm/crazy/1092.gif

PS: I really don't think you can go wrong w overdoing fiber in the fruit form! *I mean mangos, avocados... all that stuff-- they go in, they come out, perfect! But this other stuff-- the "smoothies"-- those I think you're right about! I think I put in TOO MUCH KALE & TOO MUCH BANANA....

Also, I'm having another problem with too much fruit-- which is some kind of "smelly burps"-- I don't think I can eat too much fruit! Today I'm going to eat my spinach as a salad... if I eat at all. I did eat the mango first thing-- and I also had a bunch of prunes and some prune juice (unfortunately not organic).

Anyway, thanks again-- I'm still IN MAJOR DISCOMFORT!!! Hoping it resolves soon.

PPS: I did pack a bunch of those teas & brought them in with me to work... I was thinking along the same lines... :) sorry if I'm incoherent-- and still DESPERATE!~

UPDATE at 2 PM: SUCCESS!!! PHEW!!! IT ALL CAME OUT! my god what a relief! my b.f. knows someone who blew his brains out bec constipated-- i can now see why! :) best to all... :)

Water!!! Be sure you are drinking plenty and lots of water. Even though smoothies have water from the fruit and if you add some, there's probably a lot of fiber you are getting through your diet. So try encorporating more water. Water and Fiber..a good balance is the key!!

dear Lauren

thanks for writing! to be honest-- i haven't tried making another smoothie since that first! (and I worry because I bought TWO not one vitamixes...and can't really afford them at this time...but haven't returned them either!) it has all been a bit challenging--getting back to food... I've been off the cleanse for a while-- i haven't counted the days-- and i could check & see. mainly i've been eating well-- mostly salads and fruit... altho perhaps more than I should. I have gained a bit of weight but not most of it-- and i'm still trying to figure out how to "find my groove".

I HAVE NOT BEEN DRINKING whole heaps of water though! so thanks for the reminder... :)

Soph.... you should really try and find some green mixes that you like... experiment....
Don't let those vitamixers go to waste...

I have incorporated the smoothies into my regular routine... drink one every morning....
they give me energy and I have also not been drinking any coffee... I get enough from the smoothies....

Give it a shot... make sure you mix WELL....

Best of luck on your journey.... :)

Soph...

So glad things are finally moving for you! I got really constipated for the first time shortly after breaking the cleanse. It was due to an apple smoothie. Too much fiber all at once. Was stopped up for three days, and I usualy had three elminiations/day. I was scared, too.
I used Smoothe Move and that got things going. Whew!

Like others have said, increase your water intake. You can add water to smoothies, too, and they still taste great.

Green smoothies are a staple of my raw diet. I have a large one almost every morning. I love them. And they keep me regular now, not stopped up. Don't be afraid...just use enough water. Probiotics help, too.

Your VitaMixes are BLESSINGS! Enjoy everything you can make with them. My favorite decadent mixture: almond butter, water, carob, agave, avocado, banana and frozen strawberries. YUM!

In the Arnold Ehret book "Rational Fasting" *it speaks of the great importance-that the first meal after a fast and for the next few days must be laxative in nature-so called nourishing foods are not what is needed- To remove the accumilated mass that has been gathered from the fast is the true need.

He recommends stewed spinach.
Paul Bragg recommends stewed tomatoes.
Both works geat!
But the amount that you use must be enouph to push out the old!
He also says that if this does not do it within one hour, to go ahead and eat until the bowel movement comes forth.

thanks for your thoughts. I did eat escarole when I broke this last MC. but I must say I had a lot of other "inappropriate" food too! hope you're well....right now I'm back on the cleanse w no immediate problem, but will have to keep this in mind for when I break next. :)

What is escarole?

sopheetsa
May 29th, 2006, 09:41 PM
I LOVE that you asked! :)

I myself didn't have a clue at the time. It is some kind of green leafy vegetable, http://www.wish-bone.com/images/lettuce/img_escarole.jpg which Italians (I think) cook, much like spinach. I had mine with lemon & olive oil, the way I would eat (cooked) spinach (being Greek).

How are you doing? I'm having a lazy (Memorial Day) Monday...
