I'm in day 6 of the cleanse and TOTALLY freaking out! My tongue is covered with a white coating (which is not why I'm freaking) but I noticed today 4 bumps on the back of my tongue - 2 on each side. Is this a detox? I don't want to quit now!!
Thanks for your help!

Probably....my question to you is: were the bumps noticable BEFORE you looked in the mirror? Were they bothering you?
Seriously, so many weird things happen on this cleanse I almost consider everything and anything normal, unless you're in severe pain or bleeding. So, we wouldn't want to tell you not to worry about it if it's affecting you adversely. If it isn't, then after your visit to the toilet\loo tomorrow, check your tongue and see if they're still there...they could be because your manky tongue is almost like your report card for detoxing.
**If you're not British than "manky" is a British word I've been obscessed with lately...it's similar to our "mangy dog" kind of terminology or "dirty" term so bear with me. ;)
Anyway if you're in dire pain you need to see a doctor, if not then go with it and report back here on how you're doing because WE WANT TO KNOW! :) Keep us posted, k?

hey kobythebeach & a nod to my pal *Res who I have to admit-- I'm following around on this bb!
I just had to mention-- that the LAST TIME I DID the cleanse-- which was up till a couple of Fridays ago-- I should check the calendar-- holy cow-- it was June 9, so only a little over a week ago! (That's really giving me something else to think about...)
--my tongue was getting the coating AND I HAD the bumps in the back too. I'm going to go to the mirror now and look--yup-- just checked. Now I can't say for sure-- that it's normal for everyone-- but *I* have those bumps in the back of my tongue!
OK-- I just looked it up-- and EVERYONE has 'em, sorry if this is too gross:
http://www.usc.edu/hsc/dental/opath/Images/QL/QL034tn.gif http://assets.families.com/Encyclopedias/gend_01_img0040.jpg
they're called: "circumvallate papillae" and they're the large bumps on the back of the tongue, one of the *four types of "papillae" or "taste buds" on your tongue. Enlarged Circumvallate Papillae, are part of the normal anatomy of the tongue.
In fact (isn't this more than you wanted to know?) Here's a bit more on the "geography of taste":
http://www.restorteeth.com/reports/vol9no1/taste.jpg
My guess is that you-- are having a normal "detox reaction"-- to the cleanse (ie tongue coating...)-- and it is inflaming the taste buds in the back of your mouth!
now from Peter:
There are five indications of detoxing: cravings, tiredness, aches and pains, irritability or boredom, and hot eliminations. If you have one or more of these you're detoxing. *
OOPs-- he left out tongue coating on this list! But I know he says it elsewhere--- or I wouldn't have known about it myself. Too lazy to look it up now, but needless to say--I've spent a fair amount of time-- obsessing on the state of my tongue!

thanks for both of your messages - and Sopheesta - thanks for the links. It appears I was freaking out over nothing! They are the same bumps that EVERYONE has.
Whew!!!
I'm on Day 9 and can't stop thinking about food - everything looks good to me. So I think I'll be done after tomorrow.
I really appreciate your posts and this site. I'll be sure to check back in next time I do the MC.
Take care!!!

Ok, maybe that didn't work. Am trying again.
Have the bump issue. Realized that they were taste buds, but am wondering why they're so big! They weren't this big before the MC. For those that had this same thing, did they return to normal? How long did it take?
Just finished my first MC - made it 9 days before a business trip necessitated breaking the fast. have a pink tongue that I'm very proud of though, as well as other improvements. Loved this experience, and will time it better the next time. Got stuck in the Cincinnati airport on day 2 of breaking the fast - not a lot you can eat there on day 2!
Thx!

Yikes! Stuck in an airport. :o
I do believe the bumps go back to normal. I've never had that particular experience so I'm not certain. It makes sense though that toxins are trying to escape your body and one of the methods is the tongue. If it was fine before the cleanse then I think it should be fine after.
Keep us posted! :)

Hi there! I am finishing up day 10 on my 1st MC. Yesterday, I started getting bumps on my tongue and in the back of my throat. It feels as if something is stuck in there. I realize this is a detox symptom, but I was really looking forward to stopping tomorrow. Up until this point, my tongue hasn't had much of a film on it, but it seems to have increased some today.
Am I just really getting started on my true detox?
I have felt pretty decent the whole time-haven't experienced any major detox symptoms, just being tired and HUNGRY. Today I have been famished! I just haven't been able to drink enough lemonade. I am still very hungry!
I have only lost about 6 pounds in the 10 days, which is a little disappointing. It would have been nice to lose a lot more. I need to lose about 20 pounds.
Anyway, has anyone else experienced the bumps on the tongue and in the back of the throat. It really is annoying! I keep swallowing, hoping it will go away.
Thanks,

Hi there, I finished 10 days MC 2 weeks ago and at the begin of MC I also had painful bumps on the back of my tongue. Their lasted for few days and when I scrub my tongue they were bleeding. Well their disappeared and never got back again. So don't worry!

I have had bumps on the back of my tongue since day 1. At first I thot I had a hair stuck in my throat and now, 13 days later, they are huge and annoying, and look like warts! I am sure this is detox but I keep swallowing in an attempt to get them to go down (which I know they won't). I hope they are not there for the entire cleanse as I don't know if I can take it much more, and I was hoping to go the distance. They almost hit that gag reflex. Also, my tongue has been coated brown since day 1. Too gross! Brushing the tongue does not make the coating go away either. Does rinsing the mouth with salt water for a few days help shrink them?
