Most adults are aware of feeling sluggish and tired after eating Thanksgiving Dinner. In our society, too many of our meals create this effect. The tired, sleepy, sluggish feeling is due to the energy the body must redirect to digest and process your meal.

Worse yet, this tiredness comes on top of a lack of energy that tends to pervade our lives. Where is the energy that we felt when we were teenagers? Can it be that the tiredness we feel after a heavy meal is just another face of the general lack of energy we live with from middle age onwards? Sadly, most people do not even notice the slow increase in lack of energy, depression, and irritability until they do the Master Cleanse and/or begin to eat nourishing raw fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts and juice. These “foods” contain substances that do not nourish your body. They entertain by smelling, looking and tasting good. Unfortunately, they do not build strong, healthy bodies.

Does anyone seriously believe that a diet of only fast food hamburgers, milkshakes, french fries and cookies will actually nourish the body? I doubt it—except for the very young, who are growing up with the handicap of no nutritional education.

Master Cleanse and Raw Food, what’s the connection?

Health, weight loss, energy, detoxification, vitality, positive mental attitude, and longevity are some of the reasons people choose to eat more raw fruits, nuts, seeds and vegetables than cooked food.

A more positive mental attitude was the most surprising result for me. I had a very positive mental attitude to begin with. However, when I began eating more raw fruits and vegetables and then did the Master Cleanse, I discovered that it is man’s natural state to have a positive mental attitude.

As for making it easier to switch to a raw food diet, I recommend doing the Master Cleanse. It’s an easier way to move to a raw food diet. Hundreds of people have discovered that detoxifying from unhealthy food additives and the consumption of more food than the body can successfully eliminate, removes the cravings for food that’s not good for you.


Raw Food

Raw food diets of fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts and seeds are a healthy way to prepare your body for the Master Cleanse if you have too many toxins to be able to stay on it for the full ten days. Although most people have no trouble staying the it, there are those who have eaten poor nutritionally for many years and so find the toxins being mobilized and eliminated are too many for the liver to handle easily and thus lead to severe detox symptoms.

Eating a raw food diet after the Master Cleanse is much easier because you will not have as many cravings for such things as hamburgers, pizza, donuts, etc. Cravings  are what makes it hard to go on and stay on a raw food diet.

Raw food is alkaline and thus helps prevent the body from becoming acid, which is connected to many diseases. A scientific study in the Journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine (2007 Jul-Aug;13(4):62-5) concluded that the contemporary diet can eventually result in chronic disease through repeated borrowing of the body’s alkaline reserves.

Promoters of raw food include those who say you must eat only raw food as well as those that say you should eat mostly (80%) raw food. Having eaten a 100% raw diet for six months, I recommend adding raw vegetarian food to your existing diet and using the Master Cleanse to help you eat a healthy diet after your cleanse.  An informal survey of 141 people who had done the Master Cleanse in January 2005, showed that every one reported that they ate healthier after the cleanse.

Fasting

Nearly every major religion recommends or requires fasting. The health benefits of fasting include lower blood pressure, clearer skin, weight loss, and easier breathing. These are the result of detoxification. The American diet of fast food and artificially sweetened, preserved, colored and flavored foods in addition to lack of sufficient pure water, plus smoking and lack of exercise results in an overload of toxins for the body’s elimination system. Fasting gives the body a chance to catch up with this overload. Other than health benefits you may also get other benefits like self-control and inner satisfaction. Some people have reported quitting smoking is easier because the body can get rid of the cigarette toxins more quickly, which results in less cravings for cigarettes.

The two major types of fasting are water and juice. In addition, you can fast for only 1 or 2 days a week or 1 day a month to get the benefits of fasting. A study partly funded by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute was reported by CBS News in Dec. 2007 that people who fasted once a month were about 40 percent less likely to be diagnosed with clogged arteries than those who did not regularly fast!

When you begin fasting, most people’s bodies have enough sugar stored in their liver to provide energy for about 12 hours. After that, the body begins to digest muscle for sugar. Then, after 2 days for women and 3 days for men, the body switches to burning fat for energy. At that point, most people report no feeling of hunger from then to the end of the fast. This experience is documented in Joel Fuhrman, MD’s book “Fasting and Eating for Health.”

When it comes to the Master Cleanse, people use fasting to cleanse the toxins from their bodies, which leads to weight loss because the body protects itself from the toxins by storing the toxins in the fat cells. Lose the toxins, lose the fat cells. In many people, the Master Cleanse has shown superb results, so go for fasting to achieve both quick weight loss and detoxification.


Detox Diet

We encounter many things in our daily lives which causes the accumulation of toxins in our body. Some of these toxins are created by the chemical processes inside our body like breakdown of proteins produce ammonia etc whereas some are inhaled or ingested from the outside environment like pesticides, smoke, heavy metals, pollution etc. And then there’s alcohol and cigarettes. These toxins are harmful, but a detox diet can help.

Detox diet is any eating plan which permits removal of toxins from the body. The Master Cleanse is one of the oldest detox diet plans dating from Stanley Burroughs’ 1976 book “The Master Cleanser.” According to Burroughs, the Master Cleanse removes harmful toxins and cleanses the colon, liver, kidneys, joints and all the organs. Currently there are many forms of detox diet, but they all share the concept of eliminating foods that have been refined or made with artificial colors, sweeteners, flavors or preservatives as well as meats and dairy.

Detox diet plans range from pure water fasts through juice fasts to eating 100% raw vegan food to eating 100% vegetarian food down to simply adding herbs or fiber that mechanically moves waste through the colon and out. Nearly all detox diet plans include abundant water and in some cases natural foods rich in fiber, like fruits and vegetables.

You should do a detox diet of some kind at least twice a year to ensure optimum health. If you have any health issues, consult a licensed health care practitioner who is familiar with detox diets.


Cleanses

In today’s fast moving world where nearly every minute brings you a new challenge, you may not have enough time to think for yourself. We are too pressurized by our hectic life to find time to relax. This feeling frequently changes with a cleanse. Cleansing often allows a person to relax and see life’s priorities from a fresh point of view and often helps to reduce the burdens on your body and mind. We are all exposed to pollution that creates a burden on our bodies and minds on daily basis.

Cleansing includes a variety of regimens and you should pick the one that suits your body best. A water fast is the fastest cleanse, the Master Cleanse is the next fastest. After that comes a fruit juice fast and then a vegetable juice fast. That is because fruits detoxify and vegetables build the body with vitamins and minerals. Slower than those fasts are going on a 100% raw vegan diet and then 50% raw and 50% cooked vegetarian diet. Slower than that are herbal cleanses as well as body-part-specific cleanses like colon cleanses or liver cleanses.

Faster is not always better because your body has to mobilize the toxins from where they are stored before neutralizing them. In the period between mobilizing them and neutralizing them, the toxins create detox symptoms: cravings, aches, pains, boredom, irritability, etc. If you release the toxins too fast, you are liable to feel bad until the toxins can be neutralized. So, you have to pick the cleanse that will detox as fast as possible while still allowing your body to handle the mobilized toxins.

This is one of the beauties of the Master Cleanse. It has two added actions to remove toxins quickly that have been mobilized. Not only this, but it also helps to shed  extra pounds.


Master Cleanse

Master Cleanse is a simple program with a goal to remove toxins from one’s body. Toxins come from our environment, our daily living and foods we eat. The Master Cleanse uses lemonade to accomplish this cleansing. You need to do the Master Cleanse for at least 10 days to get its maximum benefits. Some people do more than 10 days, but it all depends upon your body and your goals.

The Master Cleanse has two phases:

  1. The Lemonade Diet
  2. Breaking the Master Cleanse

During the Lemonade Diet, you will drink a salt water flush each morning and a cup of herbal laxative every evening. In addition, you will drink 6-12 10 oz. glasses of lemonade. (See the recipe in the lemonade section.) A survey of 141 Master Cleansers in January 2005 revealed that three-quarters never felt any hunger. For those that did, hunger can be handled by drinking a glass of lemonade for most people.

It is important to understand what to expect on the Master Cleanse. Because it is a detox diet, it does produce some detox symptoms. If you don’t know what they are and that they go away or diminish after the next days’ eliminations, it can be very hard to stay on the cleanse. However, if you know those things it’s quite easy. Reading a book on the Master Cleanse is a great way to prepare yourself for a very successful cleanse.

After 10 days, you move on to breaking the Master Cleanse. This is done by drinking orange juice for the first day and a half and then homemade vegetable soup for dinner on the second night. Orange juice for breakfast the third day and the rest of the homemade soup for lunch. Dinner on the third day is a vegetable salad. Vegetarians can substitute orange juice all day on the second day. Whichever way you go, take a bottle of box of probiotics according to the directions on the bottle/box when you return to solid food. Probiotics make up 30% of the bulk of eliminations as well as produce several vitamins the body needs.


Weight Loss

Weight Loss is a hot topic these days. That is because being overweight is becoming a widespread dilemma in today’s society. Although conventional health advice says this is due to less exercise, the fact that obesity is now the number one preventable cause of death in America shows that conventional health authorities do not know how to handle this. The actual cause of obesity is the same cause for the skyrocketing diabetes and heart disease rates in our society: Our diet, too many processed, artificially colored, flavored, preserved, sweetened foods with little nutritional value.

Weight Loss is made necessary because the body defends itself from chemicals it can’t use to build the body by eliminating them. The liver is the chief organ for that task. When the liver is overworked from a diet that is more than the body actually needs – recreational eating – it stores these toxins in fat cells in the liver until it gets a chance to get back to those toxins to handle them. When there’s no more room in the liver for such, the liver permits the toxins to go out into the body. The body, unable to neutralize the toxins itself (only the liver can do that), stores the excess toxins in fat cells also. Lose the toxins, lose the fat!

Whether you take a slow approach to Weight Loss by reducing the artificial food and increasing real vegetables and fruits or you chose a faster method such as the Master Cleanse, you can not only lose the weight, but keep it off!

Low Calories

Most people have no real idea of how much food they actually need to stay healthy. For example, is it necessary to have meat at every meal? How many pounds of protein does a person actually require each day? You might be surprised to learn that the Institute of Medicine (IOM) of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences says the average person requires about 50 grams a day. That’s less than 2 OUNCES a day! Not only that, but people can go for weeks without any protein provided they are healthy to begin with.

Did you know that severe calorie restriction is the only method ever proven scientifically to extend life? In fact, it has been proven over and over for mice, rats, dogs, worms, chimpanzees and apes!

That’s right. “In the last year, calorie-restricted diets have been shown in various animals to affect [areas] likely to be involved in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease and cancer. Earlier this year, researchers studying dietary effects on humans went so far as to claim that calorie restriction may be more effective than exercise at preventing age-related diseases.”

The trick to successfully eating a low calorie diet is to eat foods that have lots of vitamins and minerals, but are low in calories. What kinds of foods are these? Vegetables, primarily green leafy vegetables. You can eat as many of these as you like and you will still lose weight.

What are some of these green leafy vegetables? Artichokes, Beet greens (spinach beet), Bok choy, Brussels sprouts, Collard greens, Cabbage, Kale, Leeks, Lettuce,

Romaine, Spinach, and Spring greens.


Lemonade Diet

The lemonade diet is another name for the Master Cleanse. It shows excellent results when it comes to detoxification. It is not only low in calories, but is good tasting too. It should be done for ten days minimum for best results. It requires fresh squeezed lemon juice, organic grade B maple syrup, cayenne pepper and spring or purified water – not tap water as that has chlorine and fluoride, both of which are very bad for your health.

You should know the following if you are going to do the lemonade diet:

  • Use pure water as otherwise you will lose the main purpose of undergoing this diet.
  • Make your lemonade fresh because keeping the juice for too long kills the enzymes, which reduces the effectiveness of the diet.
  • Drink 6 to 12 glasses of lemonade per day whenever you wish.
  • Drink a quart of water with 2 teaspoons of sea salt in the morning to help eliminate the toxins and drink a cup of herbal laxative tea each night.

Many people can do the lemonade diet for more than 10 days. This diet not only helps lose weight but also pushes the reset button for the body, in many cases promoting self-control and resetting your eating pattern for healthier food. Be sure to break the lemonade diet as instructed in the Master Cleanse article as you can be quite miserable if you jump straight into solid food after 10 days on only liquid. This is extremely important if you go longer than 10 days.

When you start practicing this diet you may feel tired on days two and three, but after that, most people have more energy. This section discusses the lemonade diet recipe and what else you need to know while doing this diet.


Our Sick Society & The Road Back

Arithmetic is such a nice “clean” science. Everyone agrees that 2 + 2 = 4. No one argues that it equals 5, or 3. When you buy something at the store and use a $5 bill to pay for an item that costs $4, your change is always $1. Aerospace engineers and workers produce workable airplanes from the same plan every time. This is the mark of a known science. The exact same action produces the exact same result every time. With that in mind, let us look at cancer research.

Since 1971, when President Richard Nixon declared War on Cancer, the total amount spent on cancer research and treatment is estimated to have passed the two trillion dollar ($2,000,000,000,000) mark (Wall Street Journal, 16 Oct 2002)!

Yet global cancer rates are expected to increase 50 percent by the year 2020, according to a 351-page study from a branch of the World Health Organization. (http://www.iarc.fr/en/publications/pdfs-online/wcr/index.php)

In industrialized countries, more than one person in four currently dies from the disease, a rate more than twice as high as developing countries (countries without the benefit of our expensive laboratories). By the way, the same study reports the industrialized countries with the highest overall cancer rates are the US, Italy, Australia, Germany, The Netherlands, Canada and France.

Clearly cancer isn’t as simple as 2 = 2 = 4 or is it? A member of the Danish Institute of Health, Mikkel Hendhede, made a dramatic proposal to the Danish government during World War I. He said feeding grain to farm animals and then eating meat was wasteful. Using that system, one person can be fed. However, the same amount of grain could feed people. So, he proposed Denmark should sell most of its farm animals to Germany and turn vegetarian for the duration of World War I.

Almost the entire Danish medical establishment protested saying the proteins in grain were incomplete and there would be 1,000’s of deaths from lack of protein malnutrition.

Hendhede told of large vegetarian populations in Africa and India who seemed to do well on a meat-free diet and the Danish government acted on his advice. The Danish medical establishment were utterly in opposition to this and they spent much time and effort on the collection of statistics on deaths with special attention to death from lack of protein.

This should sound familiar to vegetarians who are frequently asked, “But what do you do for protein?” It should also be familiar to Master Cleansers who watch comments on TV from nutritionists, who have never done the Master Cleanse, saying there is not enough protein for it to be “safe.”

Surprisingly, or not, there were no deaths from lack of protein. In fact, by early 1918, the total death rate in Denmark had decreased by 17%, the major part due to fewer cancer deaths!

Once you start to look for yourself, the data is not hard to find. Albert Schweitzer reported that the natives in Gabon, Africa in 1913, were cancer free vegetarians.

In 1923, the British Medical Journal published three letters from English doctors in various parts of Africa reporting the same freedom from cancer.

In 1974, the Hopi Indians of Arizona, living on their traditional vegan diet, were reported to have only one case of cancer per 1,000 people. The white population in Arizona at this time had one case of cancer in every four people.

Near the Hopi are Pueblo Indians. The Federal Department of Indian Affairs decided to improve the diet of the Pueblo Indians by giving them food stamps providing a high meat diet similar to the rest of the population of the US. Not surprisingly, it was not long before cancer went from one in 1,000 to one in four, the same as the general US population. (http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0ISW/is_255/ai_n6212937)

Norman Walker has said the same thing for decades. T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. has recently documented the same findings in The China Study.

Step one for our sick society is for each one of us to realize we are responsible for our own health. We can and should get advice from health care practitioners, but we are the ones who have to understand it and LOOK to see if the information works scientifically time after time. When a doctor says there is no cure, he is only saying “I don’t know of any other cure.”

Step two is to decide that good health can be yours and not to quit looking until you find a workable method for you.

This world is a very large place. It is large enough for “pockets” of true knowledge to exist unknown by the general populace. There is a great deal of valuable, workable knowledge out there. You have to decide it is your job to find it and that you will not stop looking until you do.
